Chicago: 5 killed in 10 shootings in 12 hours

Five people were killed and 11 others injured in over 10 shootings within 12 hours on 25 January in Chicago. Those shot were aged from 16 to 56, with several survivors in critical condition at hospital. The burst of shootings came after no one had been reported shot in the city for 33 hours; through most of the day on 24 January in to the following day. Brazil: Watch 40-inmate prison break after dramatic explosion

Dramatic footage has emerged showing the moment in which at least 40 inmates broke free from a Brazilian jail, following an explosion through an external wall on 23 January. The video, which was circulated by the Folha de Pernambuco newspaper, shows a man entering the compound shortly before an explosion, which sends inmates running and tumbling over the smoking wall, before many turn back. Saskatchewan shooting: Hundreds attend church service in La Loche

Hundreds of people in La Loche, a community of 2,600, attended a church service on 24 January, in memory of the four victims of a school shooting in a remote part of Saskatchewan. Canadas government, grappling with a fatal attack in a remote aboriginal town, is very concerned about the tragic and alarming conditions in other indigenous communities, a top official said. Latest Isis video purports to show Paris attackers and threatens Britain

A video published on 24 January by the media centre of Islamic State (Isis), purported to show images and last statements of nine of the people who took part in the Paris attacks that killed 130 people on 13 November.
