MEA assures assistance for man allegedly paralysed by police thrashing in Madison

New Delhi, Feb 12 (ANI): MEA Spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin on Thursday said it was providing all consular assistance to Indian national, Sureshbhai Patel, who was left partially paralyzed in the US after allegedly being thrashed by a policeman. The said the Consulate General in Atlanta had been in touch with the Madison police chief, who had ordered an inquiry into the incident. As per reports, the policeman forced Sureshbhai Patel, 57, to the ground when he went out for a walk. The police had reportedly got a complaint from someone in the neighbourhood about a 'suspicious man' and when they confronted Patel, he could not answer as he knew no English. Feb 12, 2015

Authorities step up measures to combat swine flu in Gujarat

Ahmedabad, Feb 12 (ANI): Authorities in Gujarat stepped up measures to combat the fatal H1N1 virus as swine flu cases rose across the state. In Ahmedabad, arrangements for separate wards, beds, adequate medical supplies, including Tamiflu medicines, have been made in hospitals. People are being educated on preventive measures and have been instructed to wear masks, wash their hands frequently, besides sanitizing the environment. Superintendent of a government hospital, M Prabhakar said that 84 new swine flu cases were reported and 240 cases had been treated till now. The virus has killed 191 people in the country in January alone, with southern Telangana being the worst hit state. So far, 2,038 people have been afflicted by the virus in India. Feb 12, 2015

Paramilitary force kills three cattle smugglers in West Bengal

West Bengal, Feb 12 (ANI): India’s paramilitary Border Security Force (BSF) killed three Bangladeshi cattle smugglers near the India-Bangladesh border in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. The smugglers, a gang of eight to 10, were trafficking cattle into Bangladesh when the BSF personnel opened fire at them. Of the three killed, two died on the spot, while the other smugglers managed to escape into Bangladesh with the body of the third accomplice. A BSF soldier was injured in the incident. Later in the day, Indian and Bangladeshi officials met to discuss the issue of cattle trafficking and also handed over the two bodies to Bangladeshi officials. Feb 12, 2015

The exhibition will culminate on the day World Cup starts. World Cup 2015 starts in New Zealand and Australia on Saturday with rivals Pakistan and India playing against each other on Sunday. Avalanche in Kashmir kills one

Gulmarg, Feb 12 (ANI): A tourist ski guide died after he was buried in an avalanche of snow in India’s Kashmir. At around 1.20 p.m on Wednesday a mass of snow came down in a rush from the Apharwat Mountain, where there is a ski resort, in Gulmarg hill station. The avalanche also trapped three skiers, reports said. The deceased has been identified as Bashir Ahmad Bakshi, a resident near the ski resort. Family and friends mourned the loss of the 28-year old ski guide. Located at a height of 2,690 meters, Gulmarg is a popular skiing destination in Kashmir and sees thousands of tourists flock to it every year. Snowfall in the area often shuts down roads and causes hindrance to traffic and vehicular movements in the Himalayan region. Feb 12, 2015
