India's first double hand transplant successful, say doctors

Kochi, Feb 01 (ANI): Doctors successfully conducted India's first double hand transplant on a train accident victim in Kochi city of Kerala. The surgery was conducted at Amrita Institute of Medical Science on 30-year-old Manu, who received the hands of a 24-year-old road accident victim. Over 20 surgeons conducted the surgery that took over 16 hours over January 12 and 13. At least 110 successful hand transplants have been conducted so far in countries like US, European countries, China and Australia, since the first one in France 13 years ago. The patient, Manu, expressed his delightfulness and was eager to get back to his daily chores. Head of the Plastic Surgery Department, Amrita Institute of Medical Science, Doctor Subramania Iyer, called it a major feat for Indian doctors. He further said that both the hands were accepted by the patient's body 14 days after the surgery. Manu would be able to move his hands on his own soon and sensations will slowly return in three to four months, Dr Iyer added.

Thousands of school children take part in Terry Fox Fundraiser in Mumbai to fight cancer

Mumbai, Feb 01 (ANI): Around 10,000 school children took part in the 17th edition of Terry Fox Run on Sunday in Mumbai, to raise money to fight cancer. The annual charity event is organised in various cities commemorating the Canadian cancer activist Terry Fox, a cancer patient, who ran across Canada to raise money to fund research on cancer. Meanwhile, convenor of Terry Fox (India) Committee, Gul Kripalani appreciated the increased participation of people in the event over the years. The funds collected with these events go to Tata Memorial Hospital's cancer research projects who along with the Terry Fox Foundation in Canada conduct research on cancer.

EC issues show cause notice to AAP

New Delhi, Feb 01 (ANI): The Election Commission (EC) has issued a show cause notice to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for violating the Model Code of Conduct. The notice was reportedly issued after Delhi BJP chief Satish Upadhyay complained about the AAP's posters depicting his party's chief ministerial candidate Kiran Bedi without her permission. The AAP has been asked to submit its reply by Monday, failing which the poll panel would take action against it. Kiran Bedi had earlier sent a legal notice to her rival Kejriwal for using her images in AAP's posters without her permission. Adding to the party's woes, a police complaint had also been filed against AAP leader Kumar Vishwas on Saturday for allegedly making sexist comments against Bedi at a recent rally held in the national capital.

SAD delegation meets Rajnath Singh demanding justice in 1984 Anti-Sikh Riot Case

New Delhi, Feb 01 (ANI): A delegation of members of Shiromani Akali Dal on Sunday met Home Affairs Minister Rajnath Singh over 1984 Anti-Sikh Riot Case. The leaders visited Singh demanding justice in the case. Delhi SAD (B) President Manjit Singh said that the home ministry received their recommendation and has said that he will ensure justice in the case. Earlier, A government-appointed committee has recommended constitution of a SIT for re-investigation of the 1984 anti-Sikh riot cases. According to sources, the committee headed by former Supreme Court Judge Justice (retd) G P Mathur has submitted its report to Rajnath Singh last week and recommended fresh probe of the anti-Sikh riot cases through a Special Investigation Team.

Japan's Defence Minister says video showing beheading of Japanese journalist 'appears genuine'

Tokyo, Feb 01 (ANI): A video purporting to show the beheading of Japanese journalist Kenji Goto by Islamic State militants appears genuine, Defence Minister Gen Nakatani said on Sunday. Islamic State militants said on Saturday that they had beheaded Goto, after the failure of international efforts to secure his release through a prisoner swap. The hardline Islamist group released a video which seemed to show the beheaded body of Goto and threatened further attacks on Japanese targets. Japan condemned the actions of the militants and said Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's cabinet would meet in response to the video, which showed a hooded man standing over Goto with a knife to his throat, followed by footage of a head put on the back of a human body. Meanwhile, Goto's brother said that he was saddened on the loss and that he had hoped to welcome Kenji back to Japan.

Beijing, Feb 01 (ANI): Foreign Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, who is on a three-day visit to China, on Sunday, suggested a six-point template for India and China to build their relations upon and to realise the dream of an 'Asian Century'. Swaraj said that the Indo-China relation has grown beyond bilateral and regional dimension and today covers entire information spectrum. Swaraj who is accompanied on the trip by Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar, said that India would make it easier for Chinese companies to do business in the country and expect that similar encouragement would be given to Indian companies to expand their business in China.

Police destroy liquor worth 4 crores in Gujarat

Navsari, Feb 01 (ANI): Police destroyed liquor worth around Rupees 4 crores seized over a period of six months in Gujarat, also proclaimed as a dry state. Police crushed the liquor bottles, brought into an open ground in trucks, using a road roller. Gujarat is the first Indian state to implement total prohibition in 1958 over alcohol consumption.

Police recover cocaine from Malayalam actor Shine Tom Chacko

Kochi, Feb 01 (ANI): Police arrested Malayalam film actor, Shine Tom Chacko along with four others for possession of cocaine in Kochi city of Kerala. The police arrested the five people during a raid at a flat owned by a businessman, Muhammed Nisham. Seven grams of cocaine was recovered from their possession. The other four arrested along with Chacko have been identified as Blessy, an assistant director hailing from Bengaluru and three models-Tincy, Reshma and Sneha. While interrogation, the actor confessed to having received the drugs from Goa. Reportedly, all the five people are to be produced before a session court after police questioning. The actor was taken into custody two days back too for allegedly attempting to kill a security guard with his Hummer.
