Taliban gunmen hold 500 students hostage in Peshawar, 16 feared killed

Peshawar, Dec 16 (ANI): In the latest major offensive, 500 students have been held hostages and 16 are feared to be killed after Taliban militants stormed the Army Public School in Peshawar in broad daylight on Tuesday. Five or six militants reportedly wearing military uniforms entered the Army Public School in the city of Peshawar. The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the attack, saying the gunmen had been ordered to shoot older students but not children. Security forces arrived at the Army Public School, located on busy Warsak Road near cantonment, and kicked off rescue operation. Police and military officials said two of the attackers have been eliminated while one blew himself up during retaliation by security forces. They said the terrorists attacked central auditorium of the school where a function was underway. Dec 16, 2014

4 killed, 4 injured in train-SUV collision in Nawada

New Delhi, Dec 16 (ANI): Four people were killed on Tuesday in a train-SUV collision in Nawada district of Bihar. The incident happened when a Bolero vehicle carrying eight people was crossing an unmanned railway gate and rammed into the Howrah-Gaya Express train. Four others in the car were seriously injured. Remembering Nirbhaya: Politicos call for strict action in crimes against women

New Delhi, Dec 16 (ANI): As the nation observes the 2nd anniversary of December 16 gang rape case, politicians cutting across party lines on Tuesday paid an emotional tribute to the physiotherapy student who was brutally gang-raped in New Delhi. They said that although there have been some positive changes in the law since the incident that shook the nation two years ago, incidents of sexual violence against women have still not gone down. On December 16, 2012, a 23-year-old physiotherapy student was brutally gang raped and by six men, including a juvenile, in a bus. The woman later succumbed to grave intestinal injuries at a Singapore hospital, where she had been airlifted for specialised treatment. The four adults accused in the case were awarded them death penalty on September 13, 2013, with the Delhi High Court upholding the death penalty in March 2014. The case is currently with the Supreme Court after the convicts appealed against the judgement. Dec 16, 2014

India well prepared to tackle Sydney like crisis: Parrikar

New Delhi, Dec 16 (ANI): Union Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar on Tuesday said that India was well prepared to tackle situations like the Sydney hostage crisis, which claimed the lives of two Australian citizens and an armed gunman. Parrikar said this after he paid tributes to the martyrs at the 'Amar Jawan Jyoti' along with the three service chiefs. Earlier on Monday, an Iranian-origin man, Haron Monis, took 17 customers and workers hostage at the Lindt Cafe at Sydney's Martin Place and displayed a black flag with Arabic script in the window, sparking a security alert in Australia. The 16-hour siege ended when heavily armed Australian police stormed into the cafe late on Monday night. The incident reportedly claimed the lives of the manager of the cafe and a 38-year-old woman lawyer besides the gunman. Dec 16, 2014

Congress targets West Bengal CM over Saradha scam

Kolkata, Dec 16 (ANI): Congress party staged a protest against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee after one of her ministers was arrested for his role in Saradha scam. Transport minister of West Bengal, Madan Mitra was arrested by CBI on December 12. Protesting Congress workers demanded immediate summon of Banerjee by CBI. Meanwhile, TMC leaders took out a mass rally against the arrest of their minister as they shouted slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government. Police get details of pro-ISIS twitter account for clues

Bengaluru, Dec 16 (ANI): A popular pro-Islamic State Twitter account traced to an Indian engineer was back up on Monday (December 15) as police combed through tens of thousands of followers to identify sympathisers of the militant group. Mehdi Masoor Biswas, who police said was behind the @ShamiWitness Twitter handle, has cooperated with investigators since he was picked up from his one-room apartment in Bengaluru city on December 13, the government said. Mehdi's account was disabled at that time and it was not clear how it became active again. Police said the account was part of their investigation but not under their control. Security officials said @ShamiWitness had been reactivated to determine if Mehdi was a cheerleader or an online recruiter for Islamic State. Dec 16, 2014

One killed in an explosion in Imphal
