Mystery of what caused brightest flash in the universe solved

The brightest flash in the universe measured so far – known as ASASSN-15lh – was thought to be caused by an extremely bright supernova, but it was actually a supermassive black hole ripping apart a nearby star, scientists say. This is a very rare event as the star has to be at just the right distance from the black hole to be torn apart by it but not vanish inside the event horizon, or the destruction would be invisible. Giant, exceptionally rare diamonds are born in liquid metal deep in the Earth’s mantle

Huge and rare diamonds form extremely deep below the surface of the Earth, scientists have found. The largest stones form depths below 250Km – more than twice as deep as smaller diamonds. At these depths the diamonds form in areas saturated with liquid metal, traces of which scientists have observed trapped in the waste offcuts of the world’s biggest diamonds when they are sent to be cut.
