Jayalalithaa sentenced to four years jail, fined Rs 100 cr in Disproportionate Assets case

Bangalore, Sep 27 (ANI): Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Saturday was sentenced to four years prison and slapped with a fine of Rs100 crore after being convicted by a City Special Court in the 18-year old disproportionate assets case under the Prevention for Corruption Act. Jayalalithaa has also been debarred from contesting any elections for the next ten years. She has also lost the MLA's post and will have to step down as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister. She was charged with accumulation of Rs 66 crore wealth through dishonest means during her first tenure as chief minister from 1991 to 1996. Sep 27, 2014

Squash team lead by Saurav Ghosal bags third gold for India in Asiad

New Delhi, Sep 27 (ANI): Indian Men's Squash team lead by Saurav Ghosal clinched the third gold medal for India on Day 8 of the Asian Games 2014 in Incheon, South Korea. With this victory, India bagged its maiden gold medal in the squash event in the Asian Games 2014. The men's team defeated Malaysia by 2-0. The women's squash team also beating Malaysia with the similar scoreline of 2-0 clinched its first ever silver in squash earlier. Visakhapatnam, Sept 27 (ANI): A non-profit organisation on Saturday conducted a beach cleaning programme tagged as 'coastal clean-up drive' in Andhra Pradesh, with the aim of creating awareness among beach users about the importance of maintaining cleanliness. The clean-up programme was inaugurated by US Consulate General for Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Odisha, Michael Mullins, who was glad to be part of such an event. A special court in Bangalore dealt a big blow to the AIADMK leader, who has become the first chief minister to be convicted in a wealth case. The quantum of sentence is expected to come soon.
