Australias Justine Damond did not have to die, Minneapolis police chief says

Minneapolis Police Chief Janee Harteau said on Thursday (20 July) that the fatal shooting of an Australian bride-to-be should not have happened and that Justine Damond didnt have to die. Damond was shot when she approached a police car after calling 911 to get help over a possible sexual assault in her neighbourhood just before midnight on Saturday (15 July). She succumbed to a single gunshot wound to her abdomen. Speaking to the media for the first time since the incident, Harteau said Police Officer Mohamed Noor, who fired the fatal shot, should have had the body cameras turned on. She called the shooting of the Australian the actions and judgement of one individual as she distanced her department from the incident. Harteau said she would be looking into strengthening department policy following the incident to ensure that all police officers have body cameras on when they interact with the public. 1 day ago
