BSE closes points 78.86 down on May 21

New Delhi, May 21 (ANI): Trading at the Bombay Stock Exchange today closed 78.86 points down to stand at 24,298.02. At the National Stock Exchange the Nifty closed 22.60 points down to stand at 7,252.90. Essar Oil and IFCI were among the top gainers of Group A with an increase of 14.30% and 13.09% along with Torrent Power and MMTC with an increase of 12.24% and 11.33% respectively, while the top losers of Group A include Hindustan Zinc and Adani Ports with a decrease of 4.16% and 3.96% along with Ultratech Cement Ltd. and Idea Cellular with a decrease of 3.58% and 3.36% at the close of the markets. The Auto sector is up 71.31 points at 14,321.80 while the banking sector is down 184.51 points at 17,119.75 and the realty sector is up 34.13 points at 1,834.60. Kejriwal sent to judicial custody in Gadkari defamation case

New Delhi, May 21 (ANI): Former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday sent to two days judicial custody till May 23 after he refused to furnish a bail bond in connection with a defamation complaint filed against him by BJP leader Nitin Gadkari. A lawyer in the case confirmed the same and said that Kejriwal refused to file a bail bond which was asked from him by the court. Bangladesh economist highlights challenges before middle-income vision

Dhaka, May 21 (ANI): Bangladesh’s senior economist Ashikur Rahman highlighted major challenges before the middle-income vision, which the government aims to achieve by 2021, as political strikes have resulted in staggering losses to the country’s economy. Rahman said that there was a need to overcome challenges related to energy security and diversification of export base to achieve the goal of middle-income status. Unrest eased after the polls, which were boycotted by the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party, and shunned by international observers. But the respite could be short-lived as the opposition has said it will launch a fresh movement to try and topple the government. Expressing his concern over chronic poverty in the country, Rahman said the government should focus on promoting a better healthcare sector and better education to achieve inclusive growth. SC commutes death sentence of two convicts in 2002 American Centre blast

New Delhi, May 21 (ANI): Supreme Court on Wednesday commuted death sentence of two convicts, held for attack on American Centre in Kolkata city in 2002, to life imprisonment. The attack took place in January 2002 in which five policemen on duty were killed. A senior lawyer, Debashish Bhowmik, said the court directed Mohammed Aftab Ahmed Ansari, one of the convicts, to serve life imprisonment and other convict Jamaluddin Nasir to remain in jail for 30 years without any remission. Ansari, Nasir and five others were given death sentence by a lower court in Kolkata nine years ago for their role in the attack. May 21, 2014

New Delhi, May 21 (ANI): The Director General of NIA, Sharad Kumar on Wednesday addressed media regarding the arrest of four more suspects in Patna and Bodhgaya blasts that took place last year. Kumar said that the four suspects had been arrested on Tuesday night after extreme hard work. He also said that all four were residents of Ranchi in Jharkhand and were being followed by the NIA team since long. Kumar added that all the suspects in Patna and Bodhgaya blast have been arrested till now. Bhubaneswar, May 21 (ANI): Biju Janata Dal (BJD) chief Naveen Patnaik was sworn-in as Chief Minister of Odisha for a fourth consecutive term on Wednesday. He was administered the oath of office and secrecy by Governor SC Jamir at Raj Bhawan. Twenty-one ministers, including ten of cabinet rank, were also administered the oath of office and secrecy.
