IUML demands end of violence against Muslims in Sri Lanka

Chennai, June 20 (ANI): An Indian Muslim outfit met and submitted a memorandum to Sri Lankan deputy high commissioner in Chennai, demanding cessation of attacks on Muslims in the island nation. Last week, at least three people were killed and around 150 were injured during the riots between Buddhists and Muslims in one of the worst communal violence in Sri Lanka. The riots followed a protest march by the hard-line Buddhist group, Bodu Bala Sena, which is partially led by monks. Mohideen also urged the deputy high commissioner to allow a delegation to visit the affected areas.

Greenpeace India denies receiving government notice on foreign funding

New Delhi/ Tamil Nadu, June 20 (ANI): Executive director Greenpeace-India, Samit Aich denied media reports that the central government had served notice to it on its foreign funding. India has asked the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to tighten controls on moving funds from abroad into Greenpeace's accounts. The government has asked the RBI to obtain its permission before releasing funding from Netherlands-based Greenpeace International and the US-based Climate Works Foundation, both contributors to Greenpeace India. Greenpeace India receives about 60 percent of its funding from donors in India and about 38 percent from Greenpeace International.

Indians returned from Iraq lauds military and administration's help to them

Ahmedabad/ Dharamsala/ Jammu/ Jamshedpur, June 20 (ANI): An elderly person, who returned from strife-torn Iraq lauded their military as well as local administration for the help and their general attitude towards Indians. About 10,000 Indian nationals work in Iraq, mostly in areas unaffected by the fighting between the Islamic State of Iraq and the ISIL and the national army. About 100 Indian workers are trapped in areas overrun by ISIL. Syed Munir, who returned from Iraq, said by and large Indians were being treated well there. Forty Indian construction workers have been kidnapped in Iraq's second largest city of Mosul, which fell to Sunni insurgents last week.

Rescue team releases endangered serpents to natural habitat in Coimbatore

Tamil Nadu, June 20 (ANI): A snake rescue team caught two endangered snakes found in Karumathampatti village on the outskirts of Coimbatore and released them into the natural habitat of serpents. A snake rescue team deployed by VANAM (Vaigal Association of Nature and Mountain Ranges) found the snakes on the outskirts of the Karumathampatti village, about 28 KM (about 18 miles) from the hub of Coimbatore. Contrary to their reputation as a venomous vermin, the red sand boa feeds on insects and other small animals. Often found only in paddy fields and agricultural land, the boa was once an integral part of the agricultural eco-system keeping crop damaging pests at bay.
