Maoists burn polling party tractors amid elections in Jharkhand

Latehar, Nov 28 (ANI): Maoists attacked security personnel in Latehar district of Jharkhand and burned down eight tractors belonging to polling parties. A battalion of India’s paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) was returning back to its posts when Maoists opened fire. They were retaliated upon but no injuries were reported. The village head of Sarju, where the tractors were burnt, Phuldev Uraav said that he didn’t know of the incident till the next day. The Maoists retrieved important belongings from the tractors before proceeding to burn them in a field. Maoists had given a call to boycott state polls and asked people to refrain from voting despite which voters came out in high numbers to practice their franchise. The five-phased polls in Jharkhand which began on Tuesday will end on December 20. Nov 28, 2014

New Delhi, Nov 28 (ANI): Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi visited Rangpur Pahadi slums in south Delhi, where hundreds of dwellings were demolished a couple of days ago, and sent out a stern warning to the Centre against resorting to such action. Vowing to fight for the poor who were left homeless after Tuesday's demolition drive, Rahul said that if they want to use the bulldozer again, it will be his body they will have to cross first. The slum dwellers chanted slogans in support of the Congress vice-president as he interacted with some of them. Gandhi’s visit to the Rangpuri Pahari slum comes at a time when Delhi is gearing up for the assembly polls. CRPF Director General says state govt want Maoism to continue

New Delhi, Nov 28 (ANI): Director General (DG) of paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Dilip Trivedi accused some state governments of helping Maoism to continue for their selfish reasons while addressing a news conference in New Delhi. Trivedi was addressing mediapersons and other CRPF officers before ending his term as DG on November 30. Maoists, also known as Naxals, have killed police and politicians, and targeted government buildings and railway tracks in an insurgency that has killed thousands since 1960s. Meanwhile, Trivedi also said various committees and studies conducted by the government for welfare of forces was a waste of public money. The government is not serious about regulating sale of explosives whose easy availability to Maoists had led to increasing deaths of force personnel, Trivedi added. Nov 28, 2014

Security beefed up in Assam ahead of PM's visit for DGPs conference

Guwahati, Nov 28 (ANI): Security stepped up ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's meeting with the police chiefs in Assam. Modi and Home Affairs Minister Rajnath Singh will address the two-day meet, which begins on Saturday, and being held in Assam for the first time. Directors general of police (DGPs) and inspectors general of police (IGPs) from the states and union territories, chief ministers of the northeastern states, officials from the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and paramilitary forces will take part in it. Director General of Police Khagen Sarma said all precautionary measures are being taken to prevent any untoward incident. India's northeast consists of eight states which are beset with militancy and insurgency. Raipur, Nov 28 (ANI): Hundreds of protesters took to streets in Raipur city of Chhattisgarh demanding the ruling BJP government in the state to step down immediately and own responsibility of deaths of the 10 women, who went through mass sterilization procedure earlier this month. The protesters belonging to the Congress Party said if their demands were not met with immediate effect, they would march to New Delhi and meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Ten women died and 14 were in a serious condition after botched operations at a government mass sterilization "camp" in Bilaspur district. The squabbling between the rivals is widely blamed for the poor performance of the SAARC, which was originally founded with the goal of moving towards a European-style union. With the onset of winter, the Siberian birds spread their wings to begin a journey spanning thousands of kilometres. These birds from Siberia and Central Asia use wetlands as their transitory camps, which play a vital role in sustaining a large population of the breeding birds. Hundreds of thousands of exotic birds such as Mallards, Greyleg Geese, Gadwalls, Teals, Shovelers, Pochards and Coots make their temporary nests in Ramnagar. The birds attract a lot of tourists to the sanctuaries as well.
