The East Antarctic ice sheet is full of holes

Hot spots have been found in the East Antarctic ice sheet where holes – or moulins – are appearing in the ice sheet, allowing water to flow out into the sea. The ice sheet was not thought to be vulnerable to melting as it is one of the coldest places on Earth, but strong winds are removing snow and exposing ice below to melting. Dec 12, 2016
