India lauds BRICS bank set up to counter Western hold on global finances

New Delhi, July 16 (ANI): Experts and leaders, on Wednesday welcomed the setting up of $100 billion BRICS bank and a currency reserve pool aimed at reshaping the Western-dominated international financial system. Leaders of the five top emerging markets in BRICS nations consisting of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, sealed the deal to foster financial and development cooperation and keep the monetary tap running in the face of a financial meltdown like the 2008 crisis. A senior researcher at the New Delhi-based Observer Research Foundation think-tank, Samir Saran, said bank would help emerging and developing nations to mobilize resources for infrastructure and development projects. BJP leader Subramanian Swamy, welcomed the setting up of the bank, adding that the previous Congress -led government had committed to the Chinese demand to have the bank being headquarted in Shanghai.

Bill Clinton serves mid-day meal to children on his trip to India

Jaipur, July 16 (ANI): Former US President Bill Clinton on Wednesday arrived in Rajasthan as part of his tour to the Asia/Pacific countries of Vietnam, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and Australia, to review the work of the Clinton Foundation. Clinton visited the kitchen in Jaipur, being run by the non-governmental organization Akshaya Patra where he also took a round inside the kitchen where meal for thousands of children was being cooked. He then visited a school where he served the mid-day meal to the children, interacted with some of the students and praised the efforts of the organisation running the kitchen.Clinton then announced that Caterpillar inc., an American machinery and engine corporation, had come on board to provide a grant to Akshaya Patra for the mid-day meal scheme. Clinton spoke about his contribution to food schemes for students across the world and explained the importance of such meals in fuelling school enrolments and bettering the education system.

Residents protest in Kashmir after army vehicle kills three civilians

Srinagar, July 16 (ANI): Violent protest erupted in outskirts of Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday after an army vehicle collided with a cab killing three civilians. After the accident, agitated residents started pelting stones on army and tried to set the vehicle ablaze. The police had to baton-charge the protesters and fire tear smoke shells to disperse the angry mob.

Uttarakhand: Heavy rain halts Char Dham Yatra

Uttarakhand, July (ANI): The Char Dham yatra that takes devouts to Gangotri, Yamunotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath shrines was halted on Wednesday following heavy rain in Uttarakhand. The Rishikesh-Badrinath national highway (NH) and the road connecting Kedarnath-Gaurikund have also been blocked following heavy downpour and landslides. The overflowing waters of Alaknanda River may create problem for low lying areas near the river, which constitutes of around 30,000 people living in the area. People are being evacuated in disaster prone areas and moved to safer places of upper terrain.

Militants open fire in JandK, one Territorial Army jawan shot dead

Kulgam, July 16 (ANI): One Territorial Army jawan was shot dead as militants opened fire in Jammu and Kashmir's Kulgam district on Wednesday.
