Flood fury wrecks havoc in Uttar Pradesh

Uttar Pradesh/ Manipur, Aug 24 (ANI): Flood fury has wrecked havoc in Uttar Pradesh and has rendered several homeless. The houses located on the banks on river Ganga are submerged due to the rise in its water level in Kanpur city. In Faizabad district also, floods have disrupted normal life of people and left many without any shelter. A Village Revenue Officer, Ramnihal Prajapati, said the government is helping people by providing them with essential commodities for their livelihood. Meanwhile, in Imphal city of Manipur flood situation caused due to incessant rains is grim.

PM Modi assures help to Sri Lankan leaders on Tamil community issue

New Delhi, Aug 24 (ANI): Leader of Sri Lanka's Tamil National Alliance (TNA), R Sampanthan said that the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, assured them all help to ensure justice and self-respect for the Tamil minority in the island nation. Reportedly, Modi told the TNA delegation to address the aspirations of the Tamil community in Sri Lanka. Four day International Film Festival in Kashmir enthrals audience

Srinagar, Aug 24 (ANI): In a bid to revive theatre and film culture in the valley, a four-day International Film Festival of Kashmir (IFFK) 2014 was organised in Jammu and Kashmir in SKICC auditorium. The film festival, which began on Friday in Srinagar city, is being organised by Experimental Moving Images and Theatre Association (XMITA) in collaboration with the state’s tourism department. This is the fourth edition of IFFK, which is marking association’s 10th anniversary with longest-ever line up of movies from across the globe. During the fest, around 44 movies in 10 international languages will be screened at different venues. Silent and animated films also drew large viewers at the fest.

Jains begin fasting to mark Paryushana festival

Rajkot, Aug 23 (ANI): Devotees flocked Jain temples and began fasting as eight-day-long religious festival of Paryushana began. Paryushana, which means self cleansing, is significant for Jain community which marks a time of repentance, sacrifices and intense worship accompanied by fasting. Karnataka CM & many other pay tribute to UR Ananthamurthy

Bangalore, Aug 23 (ANI): Thousands of mourners paid their last respects to Jnanpith award winner and Kannada literary icon UR Ananthamurthy, who passed away on Friday. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah along with his cabinet ministers, Union Ministers Ananth Kumar and DV Sadananda Gowda, Kannada writers and leaders of all parties paid tribute to Ananthamurthy. The mortal remains of Ananthamurthy were kept for public homage at the premises of the Ravindra Kalakshetra as the state observed three days of mourning. His last rites are performed according to Hindu rituals at Kalagrama inside Bangalore University premises.

2 brothers killed for allegedly opposing eve teasing
