Student union protests government's decision to swap territory with Bangladesh

Jorhat, Dec 2 (ANI): The All Assam Student Union (AASU) on Tuesday protested the Indian government's decision to swap territory with Bangladesh in northeast state of Assam. India has inched closer to settling a long-simmering border dispute with Bangladesh, possibly signaling a softer line from Prime Minister Narendra Modi than when he was in the opposition. A parliamentary committee has urged the government to table a constitutional amendment that would pave the way for a land swap deal that Bangladesh and India have been negotiating for years. However, the AASU threatened to organize a state-wide sit-in protest in all the district headquarters of Assam, if the decision is not withdrawn. Dec 2, 2014

Government airlifts injured soldiers from Maoist attack spot in Sukma

Sukma, Dec 2 (ANI): The union government, on Tuesday (December 02), airlifted security personnel, who were injured during Maoist attack in central state of Chhattisgarh. Maoist guerrillas ambushed a paramilitary patrol in Chhattisgarh on Monday (December 01), killing 14 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) men and injured other 12 in the biggest rebel attack this year, chief minister Raman Singh said. The attack took place in remote Sukma district, in the jungle of Chhattisgarh, where members of the CRPF had been sent to flush the rebels out of their base. The injured were admitted to a hospital in state capital Raipur. The Maoists seek the overthrow of the Indian state and have operated for decades across a wide swathe of central and eastern India. Hong Kong, Dec 02 (ANI): Demonstrators woke early on Tuesday determined to continue their protests in Hong Kong, a day after thousands of pro-democracy activists forced the temporary closure of government headquarters after clashing with police, defying orders to retreat. Hong Kong leader Leung Chun-Ying said police had been tolerant but would now take "resolute action", suggesting that patience may have finally run out. On Monday the Hong Kong high court granted an injunction which would allow bailiffs to clear the Admiralty protest site. The bailiffs, if they request it, can be supported by police during protest site clearance. It's not known when or if the injunction will be carried out. Speaking on a stage on Monday night in the heart of the Admiralty protest site next to government headquarters, student leader Joshua Wong said he and two others, including a secondary school student, would start a hunger strike to pressure Beijing to grant Hong Kong full democracy.
