In Manika constituency of Jharkhand's Latehar district, rebels from Communist Party of India (Maoist) painted long declarations of boycotting state polls on walls of schools and other buildings in the marketplace. They appealed the voters not to vote and called for total boycott. This has left political parties and their candidates in a quandary, as they too appealed to the public to support them. The rebels have operated for decades across a wide swath of central and eastern India, and grew in strength during recent times in areas where poor, tribal villagers came into conflict with mining companies seeking resources for industrialization.
