Experts say former anti India U.S. diplomat facing spy probe acted on state policy

Washington D.C., Nov 11 (ANI): Experts have said that former US Assistant Secretary of State, Robin Raphel, who is under the scanner for espionage allegations, did nothing to suggest she was anti-India but merely acted on state policy under the Clinton administration. Robin Raphel, a retired ambassador who had been an adviser to the State Department's Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan (SRAP), was stripped of her security clearance and is part of a federal counter intelligence investigation, two sources familiar with the matter said on Friday. Raphel, who has been a controversial figure in India-U.S. ties, has been a hot topic in the Indian media ever since reports of her house being searched surfaced. She openly made remarks on Kashmir's accession to India in the 1990s, enraging many Indians. Indian media reports have even gone far enough to call her 'India-baiter', a 'pro-Pakistan partisan' and a 'Pakistan spy'. Assistant Professor Christine Fair, Center for Peace and Security Studies, Georgetown University, said Raphel was merely executing state policy when it came to India and Pakistan though she made inflammatory statements on India. Meanwhile, Pakistani journalist Raza Rumi claimed it was a routine inquiry and the Indian media had blown up the issue.

Ramban, Nov 11 (ANI): Distancing itself from former SSP Ashiq Bukhari joining the party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti has termed the reports of his joining as baseless. She said that the Press statement stating that Bukhari is joining the party was a clerical mistake. Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has asked for clarification over the issue. AMU VC refutes any sexist remark, says University do not differentiate between girls and boys

Lucknow, Nov 11 (ANI): Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) Vice-Chancellor Lt Gen Zameer Uddin Shah on Tuesday refuted any sexist remark by him. He said that his statement has been sensationalized by the media and that he only meant to say that the University library had no space to accommodate any more students. Shah said that all the university books are available to all the students online and there is no need to come to already packed library. Secondly, he also said that the passage to the library is also not safe for students. He clarified that the University do not differentiate between boys and girls and this is done to give a bad name to AMU.

Gujarat EC HS Brahma questions on intensity of punishment for violators of Compulsory Voting Bill, P

New Delhi, Nov 11 (ANI): Political leaders on Tuesday react after Gujarat Election Commissioner HS Brahma said that in his view, the Gujarat government’s move to make voting compulsory in elections to local bodies "may not be correct". He also questioned on the intensity of punishment for the violators of Compulsory Voting Bill and asked if the state government will put eight crore voters in jail or impose fines on them on violation. Congress leaders Arjun Modhwadia and Rashid Alvi supported the statement and said that the same needs to be decided first by the state government. Modhwadia also challenged the feasibility of punishing a large section of offenders. NCP and BJD too followed suit and said that EC has raised correct question. Meanwhile, BJP Spokesperson GVL Narasimha Rao said that Gujarat government's initiative is phenomenal and a great initiative for democracy of India.

Paramilitary holds shooting contest to test marksmanship of personnel

Kadarpur, Nov 11 (ANI): India's paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force organised a shooting competition to test the marksmanship of its personnel and to inculcate an atmosphere of sportsmanship and healthy competition. Around 766 police personnel from across the country participated in this annual shooting competition held in Kadarpur village in Haryana. This year, a total of 31 teams from 24 states took part. Speaking on the event, Director General of India's paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Pranay Sahay, told mediapersons that it is a useful platform for police personnel. Olympic medalist, boxer Yogeshwar Dutt, personnel of Haryana police received the Padma Shri, fourth highest civilian award of India, while female boxer, Mary Kom, working with Manipur police received the third highest civilian award, Padma Bhushan for their stellar performances in the games.

Bilaspur sterilization mishap: Chhattisgarh CM suspends four doctors, announces compensation for vic

Bilaspur, Nov 11 (ANI): After eight women lost lives due to sterilisation surgeries went wrong in Bilaspur district of Chhattisgarh, state Chief Minister Raman Singh said that four doctors involved were suspended and a case of criminal offense has been filed against them. Singh also said that the case is of medical negligence by the doctors and will be dealt with seriously by the state government. He also announced compensation of Rs. 4 lakh to families of dead and free medical treatment and Rs.50,000 to those undergoing treatment in hospital. Eight women had died after they underwent sterilisation surgeries at a camp on the outskirts of Bilaspur in Chhattisgarh. The women had been discharged on Saturday after being given medicines. However, within 24 hours of the surgery, many women complained of vomiting and abdominal pain.
