MHA proposes to set up Investigative Units to counter crime against women

New Delhi, Jan 06 (ANI): The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) proposed to set up Investigative Units on Crimes against Women (IUCAW) in 20 percent of districts in each state. The cost for such units will be shared equally by the state and the Centre. Home Minister Rajnath Singh, in a letter to all the Chief Ministers, stated that there is a need to strengthen various elements of the criminal justice system, namely, investigation, prosecution and trials by courts, to deal with the issue of rise of crimes against women. The Home Minister took to twitter to share the contents of his letter. He tweeted, "Keeping the issue of crimes against women in mind I have written to all state CMs advising them to strengthen the criminal justice system. There is an urgent need to strengthen investigation, prosecution and trials by courts to deal with the issue of crimes against women. MHA has come up with a proposal to set up Investigative Units on Crimes against Women (IUCAW) in 20% of the districts of all the states. The IUCAW will help the investigative machinery of the States in cases like Rape, Dowry Death, Acid Attack and Human Trafficking," he added. Jan 6, 2015

One of two constables accused of raping girl in Badaun arrested

Bareily, Jan 06 (ANI): One of the two absconding constables accused of raping a minor girl at a police station in Badaun, has been arrested. The second constable accused of the crime is still absconding. The Uttar Pradesh's Special Task Force has been roped in to hunt down the accused. Constable Avanish Yadav was arrested when he was about to board a train for Delhi from Bareilly junction late Monday night. The horrific incident took place on New Year's eve when the 14-year-old girl had stepped out of her house to relieve herself. The girl's mother had alleged that she was abducted by constables Veer Pal Singh Yadav and Avanish Yadav. However, the accused constable denied all charges and demanded probe. Superintendent of Police, Bareily, Rajiv Mehrotra applauded the development in the case and said that the second accused will soon be nabbed. Bear mauls man in Chhattisgarh's Surjapur

Surjapur, Jan 06 (ANI): A bear created havoc in a village in Chhattisgarh after it mauled a man. The man was attacked by the bear in the forest area of Surjapur district. The villagers shouted and tried to shoo away the animal but could not save the man. Reportedly, the man was an employee of Chhattisgarh Forest Department. Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (wildlife), Kailash Chandra Bebarta said the bear had attacked many animals before and the villagers were living in fear. The man died on the spot. He was a part of the team that had gone to capture the bear but the team failed in their operation. Forest authorities later shot dead the animal. The victim's body has been sent for post-mortem. Bhopal/ Poonch, Jan 06 (ANI): Security expert said that Pakistan was trying to help militants enter India by firing at border posts in Jammu and Kashmir. Indian and Pakistani troops intensified cross-border firing overnight, even as one Indian border guard died in the firing. A senior Indian official with the border security force said they had retaliated against machine gun and mortar attacks on about 60 positions along a more than 200-km (125-mile) stretch of the border. A security expert, SR Sinho said that Pakistan was helping militants infiltrate in Indian Territory as they were planning something big before January 26. Amid the growing hostility, India's security agencies last week declared a nationwide alert to avoid militant strikes in the lead-up to visits by top US diplomat John Kerry and President Barack Obama later in January. Alipurduar, Jan 06 (ANI): Police in West Bengal produced two militants in court after speculations of their possible links to guerilla attacks, which left at least 80 dead last month in Assam, surfaced. The two suspects belonging to the tribal militant group National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) were nabbed late Sunday evening from a bus stop in Alipurduar district of West Bengal, which borders Assam. Police said the two suspects were produced in the court from where they were taken back to Assam on transit remand. According to Jaswal, the suspects identified as Ganga Basamatari (29) and Sajid Narjenari (21), both residents of Assam, were trying to escape through West Bengal after the Indian army declared Operation All Out' to reportedly flush out militants belonging to the NDFB.
