It Happens: World No Tobacco Day

Andhra Pradesh, June 6 (ANI): Internationally renowned sand artist, Sudarshan Patnaik, created an anti- smoking sculptor on sand at a beach in India's eastern Odisha and rallies were organized in southern Andhra Pradesh to create an awareness regarding the horrendous effects of smoking on World No Tobacco Day. World No Tobacco Day is observed annually on May 31 by World Health Organisation (WHO). Patnaik's 5-feet high and 20-feet long sand sculpture, which was made with 7 tons of sand, depicted the harmful effects of tobacco consumption As people gathered to have a glimpse of his artistic message, Patnaik said that his main motive was to inspire smokers to quit the harmful habit. Elsewhere, in Visakhapatnam city of southern Andhra Pradesh, hundreds of people marched with placards and balloons to spread the no-tobacco message. Odissi, June 6, (ANI): Performers explored the subtle techniques of Odissi, the oldest surviving classical Indian dance form, in a day-long dance festival in eastern city of Bhubaneswar. The dancers used unique techniques propagated by Late Guru Debaprasad Das and thrilled the audience with the majestic movements of the ancient art form. Mesmerised by the aura of Odissi dance performance on the stage, dancers said it is a unique classical art form which can be understood only by live performance. The festival touted 'Debasmruti' was organised by a Bhubaneswar-based dance institution called Tridhara. Delhi court convicts 18 policemen in fake encounter case in Uttarakhand

New Delhi/ Dehradun, June 06 (ANI): A Delhi court convicted 18 policemen on Friday for killing a young student in Uttarakhand in a fake encounter. The policemen had shot dead 22-year-old Ranbir in Dehradun in 2009, alleging that he was involved in an extortion racket. The 17 accused were found guilty of murder, destruction of evidence and criminal conspiracy while one policeman has been found guilty of destruction of evidence. Victim Ranbir's father, Ravinder Pal, sought capital punishment for some of the convicts. However, Director General of Uttarakhand Police (DGP), BS Sidhu, hinted that his department might move the higher court against the verdict.
