PIL against Modi rejected by Supreme Court

New Delhi, Nov 22 (ANI): A Public interest litigation (PIL) that has accused Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi of filing incomplete details in his nomination papers for the 2012 assembly polls, has been dismissed by the Supreme Court. Chief Justice P. Sathasivam and Justice Ranjan Gogoi said it is a matter that lies within the jurisdiction of the chief election officer of the state. The PIL was filed by Sunil Sarawgi. He had sought the quashing of the election officer's decision not to reject Modi's nomination paper.

Mayawati condemned BJP, calls it communal party

Lucknow, Nov 22 (ANI): BSP Chief Mayawati on Friday condemned the BJP and held the party responsible for the communal violence that took place in Muzaffarnagar. Mayawati said that the SP government in UP is equally responsible for the violence. Further, she said that Narendra Modi repeats the same content in each of his rally, that is, criticizing the local government and administration. She also condemned the felicitation of the two accused BJP leaders in Agra during Modi's rally.

Clash of ideologies between feuding parties plunges Bangladesh into violence

Dhaka, Nov 22 (ANI): Bangladesh Supreme Court advocate and Vice Chairman of the country's Bar Council, Khandker Mahbub Hossain ruled out personal enmity between the feuding parties highlighting clash of their ideologies, exploiting tension between secularists and Islamists ahead of elections due by next January. Hossain while talking to a reporter in Dhaka said on Friday that the political battle between the leading ladies depended on their ideologies and manifestoes. Stressing on the need for an impartial government, Hossain called for free and fair elections in the country. Pinning hopes on a discussion between the two parties, Hossain said the ongoing deadlock would come to an end.

Narendra Modi slams 'anti-poor Congress' for making false promises

Khandwa, Nov 22 (ANI): Addressing a public rally in Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh, BJP's PM candidate Narendra Modi slammed the Congress party and said that the Congress makes false promises and never keeps up with their promises. Further, he talked about the Congress' anti-poor policies and said that Congress started taxes on the export of cotton, whereas subsidized meat selling and exports. He also said that the Congress government had promoted the liquor market by selling the rotten wheat to liquor companies and not giving the surplus wheat grains to the poor.

Laws of no use if offenders decide on punishment: Brinda Karat on Tarun Tejpal

Gaya, Nov 22 (ANI): Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader Brinda Karat on Friday condemned the sexual assault incident involving Tehelka magazine editor Tarun Tejpal, and asked that if offenders can decide punishments for themselves, then what is the use of having laws and courts in the country? Karat's reaction came shortly after the Managing Editor of the Tehelka magazine, Shoma Chaudhury, told media persons here that an internal committee has been set up in the office to probe the sexual harassment charge against editor-in-chief Tarum Tejpal.

Jabalpur, Nov 22 (ANI): Senior BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi on Friday blamed the ruling Congress Party for mishandling the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh and creating resentment among the people of the region. In July this year, the Congress had passed a resolution for the creation of the new Telangana state, a move that revived deep political divisions. Joshi said that the BJP supported the bifurcation, however, it was against the mishandling of the entire procedure that also fuelled protests and violence.

AAP sting operation: Kumar Vishwas defends himself

New Delhi, Nov 22 (ANI): Dismissing the controversial sting operation, which showed some prominent faces of the AAP allegedly agreeing to accept cash for improper purposes, as a conspiracy against his party, AAP leader Kumar Vishwas on Friday said that journalist Anuranjan Jha who released the sting operation can give the sting tape to the Election Commission. Vishwas also said that he will put the case forward.

Tarun Tejpal's involvement in sexual assault case sparks debate

New Delhi, Nov 22 (ANI): The editor-in-chief of Tehelka Magazine Tarun Tejpal faced flak from activists and politicians on Friday following allegations that he sexually assaulted a female colleague. Tarun Tejpal, founder of the award-winning weekly magazine Tehelka - known for exposing corruption and human rights issues - confessed in a leaked email that "a bad lapse of judgement" and "an awful reading of the situation" had led to an "unfortunate incident". Even as managing editor of the magazine Shoma Chaudhary stated that she was setting up a committee for investigating the matter, Member of the National Commission for Women (NCW) Nirmala Samant Prabhavalkar said that Tehelka's response to the case has been disappointing and setting up an internal probe committee under pressure is too late a step. Meanwhile, a BJP leader Nalin Kohli said questioned Tejpal's arrangement of stepping aside from his editorship for six months as penance.

AAP gives alternative; Hand over raw footage or accept sting video as doctored

New Delhi, Nov 22 (ANI): After a sting operation claimed AAP leaders involvement in "raising funds through illegal means", the party leader Yogendra Yadav said that the party had asked for the raw footage of the sting operation on Thursday from Media Sarkar's Anuranjan Jha and had not received the same till yet. He said that the party is giving alternative till 03:00 PM on Friday and if the footage is not handed over, the party will accept that the video is doctored and has no truth in it.

Did not 'delay' action after sexual assault complaint: Shoma Chaudhury

New Delhi, Nov 22 (ANI): Tehelka's Managing Editor Shoma Chaudhury on Friday denied Tehelka's 'delayed' action on the sexual assault complaint against the Magazine's Editor-in-Chief Tarun Tejpal. Shoma further said that within three days, she had made Tejpal apologize after which he had stepped down and even had constituted a committee of inquiry.

Karachi protest continues over sectarian violence

Karachi, Nov 22 (ANI): More than two hundred Islamists took to the streets of Pakistan's commercial capital Karachi, condemning the latest wave of spiralling sectarian violence that has killed eleven people in the country. Sectarian violence appears to be spreading after clashes between minority Shi'ite and majority Sunni Muslims in Rawalpindi, prompted the government to impose a curfew and block mobile telephone services over the weekend. Rawalpindi remained under curfew and tight security for three days after a Shi'ite procession on Friday.

Omar Abdullah lashes out at separatist leaders for meeting Pakistan envoy

Jammu and Kashmir, Nov 22 (ANI): Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah lashed out at separatists for meeting advisor to Pakistan Prime Minister on security and foreign affairs, Sartaj Aziz, during his visit to New Delhi. Abdullah said the separatist leaders didn't have any agenda to discuss. Aziz met the Kashmir separatist leaders on November 10 while on his visit to New Delhi for Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM). Abdullah also said that Kashmir's enemies lie within the state.
