Omars remark on AFSPA sparks debate among politicos

Srinagar, Jammu, Feb 24 (ANI): J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s statement that he would work for the revocation of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) that gives security forces sweeping powers to search arrest or shoot people became a point of debate and garnered criticism among political leaders. Commenting on the same, Awami Ittihaad Party President Engineer Rashid, on Monday said that the chief is trying to fool people with these false statements. BJP leader, Jugal Kishore Sharma, said the statement is political in nature as the state is still one of the militarized zones of the country. Meanwhile, National Panthers Party leader, Harsh Dev Singh, said that they have always been making the same statement since many years and it is not something new what Abdullah has announced. Furthermore, People's Democratic Party (PDP) Chief, Mehbooba Mufti said this statement is made keeping in mind the upcoming elections and political gains by the leader.

Canadian Governor General seeks to bolster business, academic ties with India

Mulayam aborts AMU trip, politicos react

Lucknow/ New Delhi, Feb 24 (ANI): Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav has cancelled his visit to Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) after protests against the UP government's handling of the Muzaffarnagar riots. Yadav was to address a seminar on the campus on Monday. There were protests on the campus by a section of teachers after Yadav was invited to the seminar organised by Sir Syed Movement.The reason for the cancellation was said to be the model code of conduct. Meanwhile, the BJP and Congress supported the protests against Mulayam's visit and said that this was expected as Muslim community was deeply hurt by the way the Samajwadi party handled the Muzaffarnagar riots. New Delhi, Feb 24 (ANI): Shipping Minister, G K Vasan asked Tamil Nadu to review its decision to release assassins of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Jayaram Jayalalithaa, plans to release the seven convicts in the killing of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi after the Supreme Court commuted death sentences of three to life imprisonment because of an 11-year delay in deciding on their petitions for mercy. However, Supreme Court has stayed their release.
