Former Maharashtra Governor K Sankaranarayanan receives guard of honour

Mumbai, Aug 27 (ANI): Former Maharashtra Governor K Sankaranarayanan received farewell by state cabinet staffs and ministers at Sahyadri Guest House in Mumbai on Wednesday. Sankaranarayanan also received guard of honour during the event. Present at the occasion were ministers and state Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan who bid farewell to the former governor. Sankaranarayanan resigned soon after he was transferred to Mizoram by the NDA government for his remaining tenure, which had to end in 2017. He has said that he would no longer wish to be a Governor bearing the "disgrace of being transferred." Aug 27, 2014

SC dismisses petition on appointment of tainted ministers, says its call of framers of Constitution

New Delhi, Aug 27 (ANI): The Supreme Court on Wednesday dismissed petition seeking the removal of Cabinet ministers with criminal background. The SC said that it is the call of the ‘framers of Constitution’ or the Prime Minister and the Chief Ministers of the state to see who they are appointing. The petition was heard by a bench comprising of the Chief Justice of India and five other judges. The Supreme Court has however clarified its stand on ministers with criminal background saying that, "Those in conflict with the law and involved in offences of moral turpitude and corruption should not be allowed to discharge duty as ministers". Jammu and Kashmir, Aug 27 (ANI): Amid growing ceasefire violation by Pakistan, director general (DG) of paramilitary Border Security Force (BSF), DK Pathak visited the border area and warned the neighbouring country that India will retaliate to unprovoked firing. Addressing a news conference, Pathak said he did not know what triggered such ceasefire violation for prolonged 45 days this year. He added that ceasefire violation is not new and it happened last year also and continued for around 26 days. Guwahati, Aug 27 (ANI): Thousands of members of the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) of Assam protested against the government for denying land rights to people living in the hilly regions and wet lands of the state and giving land to corporate houses instead. State Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi had announced on August 13, during the state assembly session, that the government would not give land rights to the residents of the region but to multi-national companies, corporates and other people as a means to earn more money.
