People in Kashmir brave cross border fire to join voter awareness camp ahead of assembly polls

Kathua, Nov 04 (ANI): Despite continuous ceasefire violations from across the border and devastating floods in the recent past, residents of Jammu and Kashmir thronged the Voter Awareness Camp with great enthusiasm to express their faith in Indian democracy. The people of Hiranagar town in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir, participated in the camp in great numbers to be aware of the electoral process of the coming assembly elections in the state. The camp was organised at a government school in the town. The participants of the camp said it is important to strengthen democracy in Kashmir. The assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir will be held between November 21 and December 20. To ensure a larger participation in assembly election in border areas, the District Election Officer, Kathua, Shaheed Iqbal organised the camp under the Systematic Voters' Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) at Marheen village to make people aware of the need to exercise their franchise. Sopore, Nov 04 (ANI): Suspected militants hurled grenades at the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) camp at Sopore in Baramulla Distric of Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday. Witnesses said people ran for cover after the explosive was hurled. However, one rifle grenade did not explode and the other missed the target. The rifle was later on defused by the Bomb Disposal Squad. Soon after the incident took place, forces, including police counter insurgency Special Operation Group and units of army, cordoned off the area and conducted searches to nab the culprits. Imphal, Nov 4 (ANI): In what seems to be a unique clean up exercise, state police of Manipur set fire to a bounty worth of large amount of drugs seized from various parts of capital Imphal. Police trucks arrived at an open field in the Lilong Pan Ahanbi area in the state capital and unloaded huge packages containing narcotics that had been seized from various police stations in Imphal between 2012 and 2013. The police officer who headed the disposal, Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Range-IV, Imphal, Kh. Chandramani Singh said that the illegal narcotics were worth more than 4.5 crore. New Delhi, Nov 4 (ANI): Security was tightened in Trilokpuri area on the occasion of Muharram on Tuesday. Along with the local police, Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel were also seen on patrol in the area. The police have imposed restrictions on the display of weapons- swords, lathis and knives - during the festival and will be keeping a close watch on the procession. The measures have been taken in the wake of last week's communal clashes in the area which had left five injured including two teenagers. Over 1,000 policemen and paramilitary personnel have been posted at Trilokpuri area after the clashes took place. Security personnel are manning the streets in Srinagar and shops and businesses have been shut down. More than 6,000 police personnel and several drones with live satellite feed would patrol and guard the city so that mourners can observe the Muharram peacefully. The processions would be taken out amid water-tight security, as Shi'ite Muslim mourners indulge in self flagellation, to commemorate the death of Imam Hussein, the grandson of Prophet Mohammad. Dhaka, Nov 04 (ANI): Supporters and activists of the ruling Awami League party hailed Bangladesh Supreme Court's verdict of upholding the death penalty for Islamist leader, Mohammad Kamaruzzaman, convicted for war crimes. In May last year, a special war crimes tribunal found Kamaruzzaman, an assistant secretary general of the Jamaat-e-Islami party, guilty of genocide and torture of unarmed civilians during the 1971 war. Defence lawyers earlier in the day said they would file a petition for a review but state prosecutors said it was not an option.
