South Africa rode on debutant paceman Lungi Ngidi's maiden five-wicket haul to thrash an underwhelming India by 135 runs on the final morning of the second cricket Test at the SuperSport Park here on Wednesday. With the win, South Africa have taken an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match rubber even as Virat Kohli lost his first Test series as India skipper.

Indian skipper Virat Kohli (85 batting) waged a lone battle to lift the struggling visitors to 183 for five in their first innings on the second day of the second cricket Test against South Africa at the SuperSport Park here on Sunday.

In the absence of pace spearhead Dale Steyn, who was ruled out of the series with a heel injury, the hosts have debuted pacer Lungi Ngidi. India, meanwhile made three changes to their playing XI, bringing in opener Lokesh Rahul for Shikhar Dhawan while pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar made way for veteran Ishant Sharma. Wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha suffered a minor niggle and has been replaced by Parthiv Patel. The South Africans are already 1-0 up in the three-Test rubber, having won the opener by 72 runs in Cape Town.

South Africa opt to bat in second Test

Indian bowlers had given India big hopes after bowling out South Africa for 130 in their second innings, setting a target of 208 to win the match. But the visiting batsmen capitulated, with paceman Veron Philander scalping six wickets. All-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin top-scored for India with 37. Captain Virat Kohli was the second-highest scorer with 28 as the hosts took a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Bogged down by the loss of their skipper Joe Root, who had been hospitalised overnight for gastroenteritis, England were bundled out for a meagre 180 in their second innings, with paceman Pat Cummins claiming 4/39. The visitors needed a mammoth effort to survive the final day, and Root was key to their hopes. However, he didn't resume the day's play, as Moeen Ali walked out with Jonny Bairstow. Ali lasted 43 deliveries before off-spinner Nathan Lyon (3/54) once again got the better of him, trapping him in front for 13.

South Africa set India a target of 208 in the opening cricket Test after being bowled out for a paltry 130 in their second innings at Newlands here on Monday. Resuming from Saturday's total of 65/2 as the third day's play was completely washed out, the hosts failed to get going and could only manage to add 65 runs before losing the final eight wickets.

Opener Alastair Cook remained unbeaten on 244 as England scored 491/9, taking a 164-run lead against Australia at stumps on the third day of the fourth Ashes Test match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) here on Thursday. Along with Cook, who notched his fifth Test double century, pacer James Anderson (0 batting) was at the crease when umpires dislodged the bails for the day.

India captain Virat Kohli gave the national U-19 cricket team a quick pep talk here on Wednesday ahead of their departure for the U-19 World Cup. Kohli who captained India's successful team to the U-19 World Cup in 2008, praised current U-19 skipper Prithvi Shaw, hailing him as a special talent. Shaw has already scored five centuries in first class cricket and is expected to be one of the bulwarks of the Indian batting line-up at the U-19 World Cup which is scheduled to start in New Zealand on January 13.

Pacers Dushmantha Chameera and Dasun Shanaka bagged two wickets each for Sri Lanka. Chasing a modest target, India did not enjoy a great start as openers Lokesh Rahul and Rohit Sharma departed in quick succession.

3rd T20I: India thrash Sri Lanka, inflict whitewash

A good all-round performance helped India beat Sri Lanka by 88 runs in the second Twenty-20 International (T20I) match at the Holkar Cricket Stadium here on Friday. Skipper Rohit Sharma, who blasted a 35-ball century, piloted India to a mammoth 260, the joint-second highest T20I total. In reply Sri Lankan batsmen struggled and were dismissed at 172, losing the series 0-2.

India put up a strong all-round show to register their biggest Twenty20 International (T20I) win in terms of runs -- 93 -- in the first match against Sri Lanka at the Barabati Stadium here on Wednesday. Opener Lokesh Rahul (61) played sensibly at the top order before Mahendra Singh Dhoni (39 not out) and Manish Pandey (32 not out) finished off the proceedings in style to take India to 180/3.
