Pallavi Durua, who belongs to Odisha's Koraput district, was crowned as the first Tribal Queen at the Adi Rani Kalinga Tribal Queen competition held at Utkal Mandap here on Sunday. Panchami Majhi of Titlagarh and Rashmirekha Hansdah of Mayurbhanj were declared as the first and second runners-up of the beauty pageant respectively. The trio will now feature in a short movie on tribal culture, to be produced by a Mumbai-based producer.

The legendary musician and dancer was born in Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh as Angelina Yeoward. Her father was Armenian and her mother Victoria Hemmings was an Indian by birth. Before moving to the erstwhile Calcutta, along with her mother and establishing themselves in Nawab Wajid Ali Shah's courts, the mother-daughter duo also lived in Benaras (now Varanasi) where they converted themselves to Islam. Victoria changed her name to Malka Jaan and Angelina's name was changed to Gauhar Jaan. Malka became a noted singer and Kathak dancer in Benaras. Gauhar began her training as a Hindustani classical musician and soon became accomplished in Kirtan and Rabindra Sangeet, among other musical forms. In 1887 Gauhar made her first performance in the royal court of Darbhanga and was appointed as a court musician. By 1896, she started performing in Calcutta and developed a huge following. The legendary dancer recorded more than 600 records between 1902 to 1920 across diverse languages including Bengali, Gujarati, Tamil, Marathi, Arabic, Persian, Pushto, French, and English. Gauhar Jaan breathed her last on January 17, 1930, in Mysore (now Mysuru).

Torrential rains clobbered large areas of Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra seriously hitting road traffic and rail operations, claiming at least five lives in rain-related incidents, officials said here on Monday. Mumbai's lifeline, the suburban locals on Western Railway (WR) and Central Railway (CR) were running between 15-30 minutes late on account of waterlogging on the railway tracks and periphery of several stations like Sion, Chinchpokli and Matunga, inconveniencing office-goers due to overnight rains that lashed the city. On the WR, the downpour had dislocated train movement due to heavy rains in south Gujarat and north-west Maharashtra, but services were restored (after nearly 90 minutes) with severe speed restrictions by 9.10 a.m. on Monday.

Rats are a major threat to our houses. At home, they can harm garments and cause short circuits by chewing up wires. Now, in a bizarre incident, rats chew up currency notes of Rs 12 lakh at a State Bank of India ATM in Assam's Tinsukia district. The incident occurred on May 20 but came to light recently. The ATM machine is said to have stopped dispensing notes. When a technician was brought in, he was in for a shock. Notes of Rs 12,38,000 in Rs 2,000 and Rs 500 were destroyed.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath met eminent cardiologist Mansoor Hasan in Lucknow as a part of Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) 'Sampark se Samarthan' (Contact for Support) initiative. Hasan is known for helping establish the Lari Cardiology Centre at King George's Medical University (KGMU), Lucknow. Even after retiring from his services at KGMU, Hasan continued to be involved in clinical cardiology, besides having a keen interest to be updated with the recent advances occurring in this field. In 2011, Hasan was awarded the Padma Shri for his contribution in the development of cardiology.

A massive fire broke out on Wednesday afternoon on the upper floors of a skyscraper, located in Worli's Prabhadevi area in Mumbai. About ninety to ninety-five persons were rescued safely. The fire, which was earlier characterised as a 'Level-II' one, now falls in 'level-III' category. Six fire engines and five jumbo tankers and a hydraulics platform and ambulance are present at the spot currently.
