Assamese teenager makes her mark in a Hollywood film

Assam, Aug 16 (ANI): Directed by Oscar winning director Jeffery D Brown, the film 'Sold' has received widespread critical acclaim since it opened at the 5th London Indian Film Festival and won an Audience award. The actor in lead role is Niyar Saikia, a girl hailing from Assam. She has played the role of the main protagonist, Lakshmi, a Nepali girl who becomes a victim of human trafficking. Niyar was selected from among 1,000 girls in Nepal and India who had auditioned for the role and had to participate in a workshop to prepare for the role. The 13-year old actor has been gaining appreciation for her sensitive portrayal of a child trafficking victim in the film. A student of class 9, Niyar has been acting since she was a kid and is currently a drama student at the SEAGULL drama institute. She has also done a number of Assamese movies with noted directors like Jahnu Baruah. Her parents are supportive of her career and are proud of her achievements. Aug 16, 2014

Maoists demolish school building in red corridor of Jharkhand

Latehar, Aug 16 (ANI): Maoists of Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M) attacked a school building and damaged it in Latehar district of Jharkhand recently. The residential school, situated in Domakhar village of Garoo police station limits in the district, was previously demolished by the Maoists a year back and the rebel group had proclaimed an order to stop any construction work in this school. However, the school authorities decided to construct six classrooms with infrastructure facilities to boost study patterns and methods for the students and teachers of the school.
