Assamese teenager makes her mark in a Hollywood film

Assam, Aug 16 (ANI): Directed by Oscar winning director Jeffery D Brown, the film 'Sold' has received widespread critical acclaim since it opened at the 5th London Indian Film Festival and won an Audience award. The actor in lead role is Niyar Saikia, a girl hailing from Assam. She has played the role of the main protagonist, Lakshmi, a Nepali girl who becomes a victim of human trafficking. Niyar was selected from among 1,000 girls in Nepal and India who had auditioned for the role and had to participate in a workshop to prepare for the role. The 13-year old actor has been gaining appreciation for her sensitive portrayal of a child trafficking victim in the film. A student of class 9, Niyar has been acting since she was a kid and is currently a drama student at the SEAGULL drama institute. She has also done a number of Assamese movies with noted directors like Jahnu Baruah. Her parents are supportive of her career and are proud of her achievements.

Maoists demolish school building in red corridor of Jharkhand

Latehar, Aug 16 (ANI): Maoists of Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M) attacked a school building and damaged it in Latehar district of Jharkhand recently. The residential school, situated in Domakhar village of Garoo police station limits in the district, was previously demolished by the Maoists a year back and the rebel group had proclaimed an order to stop any construction work in this school. However, the school authorities decided to construct six classrooms with infrastructure facilities to boost study patterns and methods for the students and teachers of the school. Principal of the residential school, Suresh Kumar Gupta, said the administration had spent 16,00,000 rupees for the construction of the six rooms, which the Maoists demolished.

Mother Nature shoots her fury across northern India in form of landslides and floods

Tripura/ Himachal Pradesh/ Uttarakhand, Aug 16 (ANI): Heavy rainfall due to a cloudburst in various parts of India on Friday wreaked havoc, cutting-off villages, washing away roads and bridges at several places and killing scores of people. In Pauri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand, 17 people have been buried alive as dangerous landslides hit the hilly region, where torrents of rainfall have been hitting for nearly weeks now. Meanwhile, cities of Dehradun and Haridwar have not gained any sort of respite from Mother Nature’s fury as 20 persons were killed when their houses were washed away due to landslides and floods. Commonwealth games medalists receive warm welcome in India

Agartala/ New Delhi, Aug 16 (ANI): 20- years –old Dipa Karmakar, a gymnast from Tripura has become the first Indian woman to win a medal at Commonwealth Games in gymnastic by winning a Bronze in Vault category. On her arrival in Agartala, she received a warm welcome by hundreds of her fans, relatives, sports lovers and well wishers. Dipa scored the highest in the second Vault with 15.100 to bring up her average to 14.366. Now, she is all set to play at Asian games in South Korea this September. Dipa and her coach Nandi were felicitated at Umakanta mini-stadium by Tripura’s Sports Minister Shahid Chowdhury. Meanwhile, Laishram Sarita Devi from Manipur, who bagged a silver medal in boxing, received a grand welcome on her arrival at Delhi airport. Sarita Devi not only contributed to India's tally of medals but also became the first women boxer to have made it to the Games as women's boxing was introduced for the first time this year.

UNCs 10-day long ban on national projects gets mixed reactions in Manipur

Manipur, Aug 16 (ANI): People in Manipur are shocked by the United Naga Council’s move to impose 10-day-long ban on national project in the state including the Trans-Asian Railway Network, NHPC, Power Grid and National highways. The bandh has been called to demand for the withdrawal of security personnel and lifting of prohibitory orders under CrPC 144 that was imposed in Ukhrul district following the assassination of an ADC member of Ukhrul. Lawyers back Chief Justices remark over judges appointment bill

New Delhi, Aug 16 (ANI): The Indian lawyers have approved of the statement given by the Chief Justice over judges’ appointment bill which has been recently passed unanimously in both houses of the Parliament. Chief Justice of India, R.M Lodha, said he hoped that judiciary, executive and Parliament are allowed to work independently and without any interference. He was speaking at a function organized by the Supreme Court Bar Association. One of the lawyers, Kamini Jaiswal expressed her agreement over the remarks made by the Chief Justice adding, he has made a valid and just statement. Meanwhile, another senior judge, Majeed Memon, reiterated the statement adding, there should not be any conflicts while separating the powers.
