Aung San Suu Kyi breaks silence on Rohingya crisis

In an televised address Aung San Suu Kyi condemned all human rights violations in regards to the violent clashes in the Rakhine state that has seen over 400,000 minority Rohingya flee to Bangladesh. The defacto leader had previously been criticised for not speaking out. She stated she did not fear international scrutiny and wanted to find out why the Rohingya were leaving. Suu Kyi said she was committed to the restoration of peace and stability and the rule of law. The Bidi Bidi refugee settlement, in northern Uganda, opened in August 2016 to home thousands of people fleeing the South Sudanese civil war. In April, the 250km2 settlement became the worlds largest refugee camp, giving shelter to 270,000 people. A besieged suburb of Homs received aid for the first time since June. Flour, medical items, water and sanitation material were delivered to cut-off Houla. Aid agencies in Syria called for regular access as one-off deliveries run out quickly. According to the U.N. more than half a million people live in besieged territories.
