Canadas $10.5m payout to ex-Guantanamo inmate Omar Khadr causes controversy

After spending 10 years in Guantanamo Bay, Omar Khadr received a payout of C$10.5m ($8m; £6m) from the Canadian government as part of a settlement. This case has been widely discussed around the world, and has recently become a major topic in U.S. media - and a very controversial one. Omar is a Canadian citizen who was sent to the US prison when he was 15 years old, after being caught in a firefight against U.S. soldiers. He pleaded guilty to the death of a victim, but later recanted, saying that he only admitted to such claims because he was under duress. The recently settled lawsuit was filled in 2004, with claims that the Canadian government breached his rights when using intelligence agents to interrogate him and sharing the information with the United States.
