Women leaders from SAARC countries come together in Kathmandu

Kathmandu, May 15 (ANI): Nepal recently hosted a "Conference on democracy and inclusive good governance for gender equality and sustainable development in South Asia" in capital Kathmandu. The programme opened with the SAARC anthem, a song penned by Kathmandu-based Indian diplomat Abhay Kumar. Nepal's education minister Chitralekha Yadav inaugurated the 3-day long event organized jointly by the South Asia Women's Network (SWAN), Stri Shakti and the Nepal based NGO, SEARCH. Women leaders from the 8 SAARC countries took part in the conference and discussed various issues concerning women and the problem of gender discrimination.

Shutdown in Kashmir against arrest and death of youths hits normal life

Srinagar, May 15 (ANI): Separatist leader and Chairman of hard-line Hurriyat Conference, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, called for a shutdown in Srinagar on Thursday as a mark of protest against the arrest and death of youths who were allegedly involved in violence. The city wore a deserted look as shops and other business establishments remained closed. An irate resident, Safiz Ahmed, said the commuters had to face the brunt of the strike as many vehicles remained off the roads. Security personnel were deployed in large numbers to avert any untoward incident. The restive region has witnessed numerous militant attacks, insurgency, and infiltration attempts from across the border in the last two decades.

Kochi, May 15 (ANI): Renowned Indian caricaturist Sajjive Balakrishnan drew sketches of cancer patients at a government hospital in Kochi city of Kerala in an attempt to bring happiness to their lives and make them forget the pain for a while. Fascinated patients watched Balakrishnan sketch and were overjoyed to spend a day with him as he made their one-minute sketches with unparalleled artistry and finesse. The artist also interacted with the patients and staff at the hospital. Balakrishnan was in the hospital as part of its Arts and Medicine project.

Women's National Football championship in Assam brings together players from across the country

Assam, May 15 (ANI): The game of football is extremely popular in the Northeast. The ongoing 20th Senior Women's National Football Championship in Assam is witnessing a large turnout of people keen to watch the games. The national sporting event, being organized for the 1st time by the Dibrugarh and Golaghat District sports associations, was inaugurated recently at the Dibrugarh outdoor stadium. During the inaugural ceremony, artists presented various cultural performances, including Bihu dance. A total of 22 teams from 21 states and the Railways have been divided into 4 groups. The matches will be played at Golaghat, Dergaon, Chabua and Dibrugarh. The championship commenced with the inaugural match between West Bengal and Delhi.

BJP prepares for win in General Elections

Gujarat, May 15 (ANI): Confident of a win with clear majority, BJP gears up to celebrate its victory in the country's mammoth general elections on Thursday, a day before the poll results. With a few more hours remaining for the fate of the world's largest democracy to be decided, BJP in Gujarat has already started preparing for the post-win celebrations and interactions. The confidence comes from the exit polls, conducted after the poll exercise ended on May 12, which showed the BJP and its allies would touch half-way mark in the 543-member Lok Sabha of the Parliament. Meanwhile, BJP members in Rajkot also prepared for the celebrations to be held tomorrow. They plan to lighten the city with bursting crackers as soon as the results are declared, apart from setting up a large screen where results will be telecasted.

People of Rajouri and and Poonch have been demanding rail connectivity for years. The local leaders had promised them that the railway project would be taken up soon, but it hasn’t started yet. The govt. middle school Gohan in district Baramulla excels in education, but has a poor play ground, and as a result the students are not able to take part in different sporting activities. Also, the school does not have a proper fence, which compromises the privacy of the students.
