Scores of Buddhists assemble for religious festival in northeastern India

Agartala/ Bodh Gaya, Oct 13 (ANI): Scores of Buddhists congregated in the historical monastery of Tripura recently to participate in the 38th 'Kathin Chibor Dan,' one of the main religious festivals of their community. 'Kathin Chibor Dan' means 'Offering of Difficult Monk Robe', an annual colourful festival. The festival is celebrated throughout the world within one month of the conclusion of 'Prabarana Purnima'. The robe that the Buddhist monks wear is known as 'Chibar' and it is believed that the donation of robes to monks is the highest sacrifice, according to Buddhism, and the occasion marks the most significant religious festival of Buddhists. He also added that this festival spreads an important message of sacrifice. Meanwhile, Buddhist monks gathered at the religious site of Bodh Gaya to offer prayers to Lord Buddha during the festival for world peace.

Schools reopen in Kashmir as shelling stops at border

Rajouri, Oct 13 (ANI): Schools in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir have reopened after shelling stopped at the de-facto border between India and Pakistan. Schools along the border had been closed down amid continuous shelling. School head, Raees Ahmed, said that with the shelling having stopped, students are now coming to school. Meanwhile, a student, Habiba Kausar, said that peace should be maintained along the border so that education does not suffer. 20,000 Indian civilians have fled their homes in the lowlands around India's Jammu region to escape the fighting, taking refuge in schools and relief camps. Nine Pakistani and eight Indian civilians have been killed since security forces from both sides started heavy shelling more than a week ago along a 200-km (125-mile) stretch of border in Kashmir.

Govt proposes to increase compensation amount for surrendering Maoists Reactions flow

New Delhi, Oct 13 (ANI): The Central Government's proposal to increase the compensation amount for Maoists who surrender to the government has invited reactions. Congress leader Rashid Alvi said that increasing the compensation amount may help in reducing the effects of Maoism in the areas most affected as more Maoists may surrender. CPI leader Atul Anjan said that the Central and State governments come up with various schemes to combat Maoism and increasing the compensation amount may also help. Meanwhile, social activist Swami Agnivesh said that increasing compensation amount will not be helpful in reducing Maoist activities; instead the entire issue should be solved by discussion.

Residents of Visakhapatnam face lack of amenities after cyclone Hudhud

Visakhapatnam/ Bhubaneshwar, Oct 13 (ANI): Residents in the port city of Visakhapatnam faced lack of food and fuel on Monday morning after cyclone Hudhud lashed the Andhra Pradesh on Sunday leaving behind a trail of destruction in its path. The cyclone blasted India's eastern seaboard on Sunday with gusts of up to 195 km per hour (over 120 mph), uprooting trees, damaging buildings and killing at least six people despite a major evacuation effort. The cyclone after passing through Visakhapatnam had hit the adjoining state of Odisha but with less intensity. The capital city of Odisha, Bhubaneshwar, saw less damage in comparison. A local from Bhubaneshwar, Naveen Mishra, said he was happy that the cyclone had passed.

Meerut, Oct 13 (ANI): In the recent development of Meerut's 'love jihad' case, the 22-year-old girl took a U-turn and denied allegations of gang rape and forceful conversion of religion. The victim said that she ran away with the Muslim boy on her free will. In a written statement, the girl complained to the police of threats of being killed from her own family. Earlier, the girl had alleged she was gang raped and was forcefully converted to Islam. The victim's family said that the boy has threatened the victim and pressurized her to give such a statement.

Bad weather not expected in Odisha, rainfall may occur at some places: IMD

Bhubaneshawar, Oct 13 (ANI): The Director of Bhubaneshwar unit of Indian Meteorological Department, SC Sahu said on Monday that the cyclone Hudhud which hit the coasts of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha on Sunday will decrease in intensity. Sahu said that bad weather is not expected in Odisha, although rainfall may occur in some internal pockets. He also said that rainfall will gradually decrease in South West parts of Odisha.
