India well prepared to tackle Sydney like crisis: Parrikar

New Delhi, Dec 16 (ANI): Union Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar on Tuesday said that India was well prepared to tackle situations like the Sydney hostage crisis, which claimed the lives of two Australian citizens and an armed gunman. Parrikar said this after he paid tributes to the martyrs at the 'Amar Jawan Jyoti' along with the three service chiefs. Earlier on Monday, an Iranian-origin man, Haron Monis, took 17 customers and workers hostage at the Lindt Cafe at Sydney's Martin Place and displayed a black flag with Arabic script in the window, sparking a security alert in Australia. The 16-hour siege ended when heavily armed Australian police stormed into the cafe late on Monday night. The incident reportedly claimed the lives of the manager of the cafe and a 38-year-old woman lawyer besides the gunman. Dec 16, 2014

New Delhi, Dec 16 (ANI): As the nation observes the 2nd anniversary of December 16 gang rape case, politicians cutting across party lines on Tuesday paid an emotional tribute to the physiotherapy student who was brutally gang-raped in New Delhi. They said that although there have been some positive changes in the law since the incident that shook the nation two years ago, incidents of sexual violence against women have still not gone down. On December 16, 2012, a 23-year-old physiotherapy student was brutally gang raped and by six men, including a juvenile, in a bus. The woman later succumbed to grave intestinal injuries at a Singapore hospital, where she had been airlifted for specialised treatment. The four adults accused in the case were awarded them death penalty on September 13, 2013, with the Delhi High Court upholding the death penalty in March 2014. The case is currently with the Supreme Court after the convicts appealed against the judgement. Dec 16, 2014

New Delhi, Dec 16 (ANI): Four people were killed on Tuesday in a train-SUV collision in Nawada district of Bihar. The incident happened when a Bolero vehicle carrying eight people was crossing an unmanned railway gate and rammed into the Howrah-Gaya Express train. Four others in the car were seriously injured. He said that lots of changes have occurred and steps have been taken so that grievances of the women who come to police are heard effectively and actions are taken in fast pace. Bassi also talked about self defence training and urged that compulsory self defence training for girls be introduced in schools right from the age of seven years. New Delhi, Dec 16 (ANI): After BJP Parliamentary meet ended on Tuesday, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said that the party discussed on 'good governance day' among many other issues. Naqvi said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Finance Minister Arun Jaitely, Home Minister Rajnath Singh and other senior leaders were present at the event. He went on to say that the party discussed on five way programme to be carried on for 'good governance day' on December 25. Naqvi also said that the PM has asked the ministers to maintain good governance. The prime minister also saluted the martyred army personnel on 'Vijay Diwas'.
