Patel in her inaugural speech welcomed the dignitaries present at the Vibrant Gujarat Summit. She added that Gujarat wants to become an education and healthcare hub. She further stated that agriculture, food processing and dairy industries are very important for the state.

UN Gen Sec Ban Ki-Moon visits Sabarmati Ashram

Ahmedabad, Jan 11 (ANI): United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon on Sunday visited Sabarmati Ashram of Mahatma Gandhi ahead of the Seventh Vibrant Gujarat Summit. The UN Secretary General will be the keynote speaker on the Vibrant Gujarat Summit. He will also meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the summit sidelines. Ban Ki-Moon, who is on a three day trip to India, arrived in the national capital earlier on Saturday.

NDFB(S) platoon commander killed in encounter

Kokrajhar, Jan 11 (ANI): Self-styled platoon commander of tribal militant group National Democratic Front of Bodoland (Sonobijit) was killed in an encounter with joint team of police and armed border force in Assam. Identified as Jwblang, he was involved in the December 23 attack on Pakhriguri village in Assam in which five tribal people were also killed. Last month over 80 people were killed in militant attacks in different districts of the northeastern state. Police believe that a faction of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB), was behind coordinated attacks on tea plantation workers and their families. A joint operation was launched by police and armed border force, Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), near Khawsibazar area under Serfanguri police station in which the militant was killed.

Encounter with Maoists in Chhattisgarh leaves one policeman dead

Raipur, Jan 11(ANI): An encounter between security personnel and Maoists in Chhattisgarh left one policeman dead and four others injured. The incident happened in Narayanpur district of the state when joint team of police and Chhattisgarh Armed Force (CAF) were out on an operation after receiving information about the movement of Maoists in the area. The police are yet to investigate which Maoist group was behind the attack.

Innovative bike squad to put out fire in Varanasi

Varanasi, Jan 11 (ANI): Fire brigade department in Varanasi has launched an innovative bike service to reach the narrow alleys of the city in case fire breaks out. Brain behind the project, Sunil Singh, said the idea occurred to him as fire brigade department faced difficulties in negotiating the narrow by-lanes of the city. Singh said each bike is fitted with a siren and hooter and two fire extinguishing cylinders with a capacity of 9 liter water and foam chemical container. He said the new bike squad was proving to be extremely helpful to the fire brigade department. Taking part in a mock drill, fireman Dhananjay Singh said it was a good initiative as fire could be restricted from spreading. The alleys of Varanasi form a maze parallel to the river, running between homes, palaces and places of worship in the ancient city.

Crude Bomb explodes near Dumdum railway station in Kolkata, reportedly three injured

Dumdum, Jan 10 (ANI): Atleast three people were injured after a crude bomb placed inside a Tiffin box exploded on Saturday near Dumdum Cantonment railway station on the outskirts of Kolkata. According to media reports, the blast took place near platform number 2, where a Tiffin box with a circuit was found. Few cans with explosives have also been found. According to initial reports, the injured were rag-pickers who were sifting through the garbage dump when the bomb went off. Further details are still awaited.

International Kite Festival kicks off in Gujarat

Ahmedabad, Jan 10 (ANI): The International Kite Festival kicked off in Ahmedabad city of Gujarat on Saturday with Chief Minister Anandiben Patel inaugurating the four-day event. The festival attracts enthusiastic kite makers and flyers from across the globe. Kites in various shapes and hues took over the Ahmedabad sky as foreign and local kite flyers competed with each other. The festival that marks the end of winter will culminate on January 13. As many as 150 international kite flyers are participating in the festival along with domestic participation from various parts of the country. Various musical and cultural programmes have also been arranged to showcase the local flavor to foreign tourists thronging the city for the festival.

Young artists in Vadodara create 190 feet long painting to spread message of peace

Vadodara, Jan 10 (ANI): Around 200 children in Vadodara city created a 190-foot long painting with an aim to spread the message of peace across the globe. The young artists painted their thoughts about world peace in the painting titled, 'On The Wings Of White Angels'. The event's organiser, Hitesh Rana, said on Saturday that a photographic album of the painting would be presented to world leaders. The young artists have depicted various forms of communal violence and militancy in their painting.

BJP condemns as Kejriwal counter attacks PM Modi's remarks on AAP
