Mumbai Police Commissioner seeks resignation, may contest LS polls

Mumbai, Jan 31 (ANI): Mumbai Police Commissioner Satyapal Singh filed resignation letter and sought resignation from the Indian Police Service and is said to be preparing to contest the upcoming general elections. Singh said that he wants to expand his sphere and work towards the national reconstruction and world peace. On being asked which party he is to join, Singh said the decision will come soon.

National election observation council calls violence-plagued polls in Bangladesh exclusive

Dhaka, Jan 31 (ANI): Chairman of Bangladesh's national election observation council--Jatiya Nirbachon Porjobekkhon Parishad, (JANIPOP)--Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah hailed the disputed elections conducted in Dhaka, as the country was hit by political turmoil amid growing international calls for fresh and inclusive polls. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's Awami League ended with more than two-thirds of seats in a contest that was shunned by international observers as flawed and derided as a farce by the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). Talking to a reporter in Dhaka, Kalimullah said that the election commission succeeded in conducting the polls although the voter turnout was low.

Krishi Mela highlights the commendable work of farmers and agriculture department in Manipur

Manipur, Jan 31 (ANI): A four-day long state level Krishi Mela was recently organised by the Agricultural Technology Management Agency in collaboration with the State Agriculture Department at the Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen in Imphal. Addressing the event, Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam stressed on the need for the introduction of modern agriculture techniques. Around 37 stalls from concerned departments and progressive farmers showcased their products and achievements. Technical sessions for farmers were also conducted as part of the fair. In the last five to six years, the directorate of Agriculture along with the horticulture Department, Fisheries directorate, Veterinary and Animal Husbandry directorate has been trying to boost production in the state to meet the food demands.

Subsidised LPG cylinders cap hiked, politicos react

New Delhi, Jan 30 (ANI): After government raised the quota of subsidised LPG to 12 cylinders per household in a year from nine, politicos questioned the requirement of such an amendment at a time when 2014 general elections are approaching. JD (U) leader KC Tyagi condemned the decision and said that this comes as a preparation for the polls. Meanwhile, SP leader Naresh Agarwal also condemned the decision and said that when the third front will come to power, it will remove the system as a whole.

10 killed in Assam firing, locals block Assam-Arunachal Pradesh highway in protest

Sonitpur, Jan 30 (ANI): Locals in Sonitpur district of Assam blocked the National Highway 52 connecting the state with neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh in protest against the killing of 10 people in an alleged land dispute. Ten people were killed and 12 others injured after a dispute over eviction from encroached land in the area turned ugly. The area has been a bone of contention between the two states for decades. An eyewitness, Aakash said there were at least hundred people who attacked the village.

Handgun made in memory of Delhi gang rape victim draws women's ire

AAP will contest on over 350 LS seats: Sanjay Singh

New Delhi, Jan 30 (ANI): After meeting of Parliamentary Action Committee, AAP leader Sanjay Singh said that the party will contest Lok Sabha elections in 20 states on over 350 seats. But the candidates, he said, will be selected among those who pass the mandate required for a particular constituency. Further, slamming on Congress leader AM Khan who created ruckus at Arvind Kejriwal's press conference and demanded probe on Batla House encounter, he said that Congress was in power for more than 10 years and they should be the one probing the case. He also said that AAP never mentioned anything as such in its election manifesto.

India, Bangladesh resume bus service as political tensions simmer in Dhaka

Agartala, Jan 30 (ANI): India, Bangladesh resumed the border bus service, which was suspended following violence and strike in Dhaka, ensuring smooth passage of goods and commuters. Commuters hoped for trouble-free passage at the transit points. Earlier, an Indian bus was set ablaze by violent protestors close to Dhaka leading to suspension of service. Cabinet raises LPG subsidy cap from 9 to 12 cylinders

New Delhi, Jan 30 (ANI): Union Oil Minister Veerappa Moily on Thursday announced a raise in the quota of subsidized LPG cylinders from 9 to 12 per household in a year. He said that from February 1, every month one subsidized cylinder will be available to each household. The move comes days after Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi, had demanded raising the ceiling. Consumers who have exhausted their quota have to buy LPG at the market price of Rs. 1,258 per cylinder. Subsidized LPG costs Rs. 414 per 14.2kg cylinder in Delhi.

Capt Gopinath on DGCA guidelines about giving MPs VIP treatment

Bangalore, Jan 30 (ANI): Aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation has asked all airlines and airports to treat MPs as VIPs and adhere to the guidelines on protocol norms. DGCA has asked private airlines to offer special privileges to MPs including advance notice of flight delays, escorts, priority check-in, security, immigration clearances, lounge access and complimentary refreshments. Reacting over this Captain Gopinath, the founder of Air Deccan and AAP member said that it is an ill advised circular and DGCA should withdraw this.
