One year on, Uttarakhand victim's relatives still await compensation from govt

New Delhi/Kanpur / Vadodara/Uttarakhand, June 16 (ANI): One year on and the struggle facing the relatives of victims of the deadliest flash floods in Uttarakhand didn't come to an end as the government failed to compensate them after the tragedy. The unprecedented rainfall last year, which wreaked havoc across Uttarakhand, making rivers overflow and setting off massive landslides, killed almost 6,000 people. Two million people have had their lives disrupted by the devastation and are trying to cope with the impact of the calamity. A relative of the flood victim, Umesh Gussa, lamented over state and central government's apathy towards their long-pending demands. Crowd of relatives of the flood victims came out in droves in Kanpur city of Uttar Pradesh and protested against the state government. One of the protesters, Varun, vented out his ire as he has not yet received death certificate of his dear ones.

Michael Schumacher out of coma, leaves hospital

New Delhi, June 16 (ANI): Famed Formula One racer Michael Schumacher is reportedly out of coma and has left a French hospital where he was receiving treatment. In a statement issued today, Schumacher's official spokesperson Sabine Kehm said he has left the Grenoble hospital to continue rehabilitation and is no longer in a coma. The statement did not say where the seven-time F1 champion was taken or give any details of his condition. Schumacher, 45, was in a medically induced coma in Grenoble, since being badly injured in a ski accident on December 29 in France. He had hit the right side of his head on a rock, cracking his helmet.

Kashmir reels under summer heat, demand for coolers soars

With mercury going northwards, residents of Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, have started buying air-conditioners and coolers, the use of which was once unheard of in the cool hill station, in their homes for some respite. Akhilesh announces 20 lakh compensation for 2 murdered policemen

Varanasi, June 16 (ANI): The Uttar Pradesh government has announced a compensation of 20 lakh each to the families of two policemen who were shot dead in Firozabad on Sunday. UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav said, "The two policemen who died in an encounter in Ferozabad, lost their lives to ensure law and order." The incident led to a violent protest in the Ramgarh district, Firozabad. Protestors in Firozabad blocked the roads and were seen hurling stones and vandalising buses.

Pakistan forces violating human rights in Balochistan

Geneva, June 16: The people of Dera Bugti and Sui in Balochistan are facing the heat of the Pakistan Army's deadly operation. Over a dozen of people have been picked up by the Pakistani armed forces during a search operation in Sui, whereas bombardments have claimed many innocent lives in Dera Bugti's Geyanderi region. Baloch political parties allege that the armed forces are carrying out door to door searches without proper warning, and have tortured and beaten up women during the operation. However, Baloch nationalist leader and representative of Balochistan at the UNHRC Mehran Marri blamed Pakistan's Nawaz Sharif Government for not protecting the rights of the people of Balochistan. The discovery of mass graves in Balochistan in January this year exposed the "pick, kill and dump" policy of the Pakistani armed forces. The Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) estimates that over 100 dead bodies have been recovered from three mass graves, and have called it 'genocide' of the Baloch people.
