Reactions flow on reports of Congress-NCP sharing seat in Maharashtra

New Delhi, July 24 (ANI): Political leaders on Thursday reacted over reports of Congress and NCP sharing seat in Maharashtra during upcoming polls. NCP leader Tariq Anwar stated that Congress and NCP are an integral part of UPA and they will mutually decide how to plan candidates in Maharashtra. Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge said that NCP Chief Sharad Pawar is a wise man and he will take a proper decision along with Congress President Sonia Gandhi which will strengthen the two party's relations. Meanwhile, BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said that Congress is a drowning party and whoever will remain allied to it will also get drowned.

Queen Elizabeth II declares 2014 Commonwealth Games open in Glasgow

Glasgow, July 24 (ANI): The colourful event of Commonwealth Games 2014 kicked off in Glasgow after some enthralling dance and singing performances at the Celtic Park and a minute's silence for the victims of the Malaysian Airlines crash. Queen Elizabeth II travelled by train to Glasgow and declared the games open at the end of the evening's ceremony. Around 6,000 athletes gathered for the opening of the Commonwealth Games. The Games, open to athletes from the 53 Commonwealth of Nations, feature 22 sports. With nations including Jamaica, Kenya, Australia, England, Canada and South Africa participating, there are a significant numbers of Olympic medalists taking part.

NSUI workers protest against Shiv Sena

New Delhi, July 24 (ANI): National Students' Union of India (NSUI) workers on Thursday held a protest outside the Rail Bhawan against the Shiv Sena for allegedly forcing a Muslim man to break his fast. The protesters were, however, detained by the Delhi police. Shiv Sena MPs allegedly forced a Muslim catering supervisor to break his Ramzan fast at Maharashtra Sadan in New Delhi last week. The MPs were apparently angry over not being served good quality Maharashtrian food.

At least 12 children, driver killed as school bus collides with train in Telangana

New Delhi, July 24 (ANI): At least 12 children are feared dead after a train crashed into their school bus at an unmanned railway crossing in Medak district of Telangana on Thursday. The bus driver was also killed. The bus was carrying around 40 children of the Kakatiya School. Witnesses say the bus was dragged for some distance. TRS has called the incident very unfortunate.

Police kill Maoist in encounter; recover arms in Jharkhand

Khunti, July 24 (ANI): Police killed one Maoist in an encounter and also recovered a huge cache of arms in red corridor of Khunti district in Jharkhand. On a tip off, police launched a joint operation along with paramilitary, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in an area where 20 to 25 rebels were estimated to be hiding. During the search operations, Maoists started firing at the police and during the encounter one Maoist was shot dead. Maoists, also known as Naxals, have killed police and politicians, and targeted government buildings and railway tracks in an insurgency that has killed thousands since 1960s.

Netherlanders mourn for MH17 victims

Amsterdam, July 24 (ANI): A day of national mourning took place in the Netherlands, as the first bodies of the crashed Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 victims arrived back in the country. As the remains were taken for identification at a military base, memorials and a moment of silence were held to remember those who were killed. When the first bodies arrived, thousands gathered to walk in silence. Through the center of Amsterdam, an entire country displayed its resilience. While the identification process began at a medical facility in the town of Hilversum, people of the Netherlands showed solidarity.

Authorities in Siliguri take preventive measures to tackle Japanese encephalitis

Siliguri /Vadodara, July 24 (ANI): Health department in West Bengal took preventive measures to tackle Japanese encephalitis as 83 cases of the disease have been detected in the region. An outbreak of encephalitis syndrome is playing havoc near Siliguri district of the state. Following the increase of deaths, the district administration conducted a meeting with several departments to tackle the situation. Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC) is spreading bleaching powders, conducting fogging at the piggeries and holding awareness campaigns. Sanitary Inspector from the Siliguri Municipal Corporation, Sunil Sarkar, said that they have identified the piggeries, given notice to vacant the places. Meanwhile, Gujarat also witnessed death of four children due to Chandipura virus in last 24 hours. Superintendent at Sir Sayajirao Gaikwad Hospital, Rajiv Deveshwar, said this illness is caused due to Chandipura virus which spreads through sand fly’s bite.
