Sonia Gandhi directs Congress workers not to celebrate her birthday in wake of terror attacks

New Delhi, Dec 08 (ANI): Congress President Sonia Gandhi has given directions to all party workers not to celebrate her birthday in wake of terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir and Chhattisgarh. Gandhi, who will turn 68 on Dec 09, is deeply affected by various militant and Naxal attacks which is why she chose not to celebrate the day. Nearly 11 soldiers were martyred in a militant attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Uri sector last week and at least 14 CRPF soldiers lost their lives in Chhattisgarh naxal attack.

Delhi court convicts four persons guilty in 1975 LN Mishra murder case

New Delhi, Dec 08 (ANI): A Delhi court on Monday pronounced four people guilty in 1975 LN Mishra murder case. Mishra was former railway minister and was murdered at a function in Bihar nearly 40 years ago. The court has fixed December 15 for hearing arguments on the quantum of punishment. All four have been taken in custody. Over 200 witnesses, including 161 prosecution witnesses and more than 40 defence witnesses, were examined in the case. The accused had earlier approached the Supreme Court for quashing of the trial against them in the murder case. The apex court had on August 17, 2012 dismissed their pleas on the ground that the proceedings could not be quashed merely because they had not been concluded in the last 37 years.

People from all faiths congregate at annual Urs of Sheikh Noor-Ud-Din

Budgam, Dec 08 (ANI): Kashmir, besides being called as paradise on earth, also houses shrines of various Sufi saints. These saints have preached oneness on the soil of Jammu and Kashmir which is a mix of different religious faiths. Their spirituality and simple life attracted people of different faiths and they embraced their teachings, besides holding them in high regard. It is these teachings of oneness and brotherhood that bind people together and they celebrate them with utmost religious fervor. A similar example is seen at the Shrine of Sheikh Noor Ud Din Noorani (RA) at Chara-i-Sharief in Budgam district of central Kashmir, where devotees pay obeisance to saint and seek his blessings. Thronging the shrine in thousands, the devotees hold the day-and-night-long prayers to pay homage to the saint, besides asking for fulfillment of their wishes. Women, men and children chant hymns and offer prayers in the week long celebrations.

Srinagar, Dec 08 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday addressed a rally in Srinagar city of Jammu and Kashmir. Modi attacked the current state government under the leadership of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah saying that the government was asleep when the state witnessed floods. He said that he came running to the state and offered monetary help for victims after which some people showed distrust in government asking for direct help. He also said that he chose to celebrate Diwali with the flood victims and listening to their grief and troubles. Modi also appealed to the people of Jammu and Kashmir to vote for a full majority BJP government.

AIIMS student hangs herself in hostel room

New Delhi, Dec 08 (ANI): A 20-year-old student AIIMS student committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling fan of her hostel room at the institute. According to the reports, the girl was depressed over her relations with the hostel superintendent and other staff at the AIIMS. Victim's friend and family alleged that the warden and the class teacher used to torture her because of which she committed suicide. Students staged protest outside the director's bungalow on Monday morning. Police is investigating the case and postmortem report of the dead body is awaited.

Tourists throng Shimla for ice skating

Shimla, Dec 08 (ANI): Tourists from different states thronged Shimla city in Himachal Pradesh and enjoyed ice skating. Visitors who could not see snowfall in hill town of Kufri enjoyed ice skating as a swimming pool of an amusement park was turned into an ice rink. One of the organisers, Nishant Nag, said that tourists were getting disappointed as the region was not witnessing snowfall for past few years. Tourists from different regions like Ludhiana, Rajasthan, etc enjoyed ice skating and instructors were seen helping them.

Parliament logjam ends after Government agrees to Opposition resolution

New Delhi, Dec 08 (ANI): After a week of Parliament logjam, Rajya Sabha ended the impasse over Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti's controversial remarks on Monday after Rajya Sabha Chairman Hamid Ansari intervened. Rajya Sabha resumed normal functioning during Question Hour after the Government and the opposition leaders agreed to a compromise formula to end the protests. Following the compromise, Ansari made a fresh appeal to "all members of Parliament, ministers and leaders of all political parties to maintain civility at all costs in public discourse". Parliamentary Affairs Minister Venkaiah Naidu confirming the development said that the impasse over the minister's remark has ended after RS chairperson's intervention and appealed the opposition leaders to co-operate with the government.

Delhi Rape Case: Protests continue in national capital even as govt bans Uber cab services

New Delhi, Dec 08 (ANI): Series of protests continue to take place across the national capital over Delhi rape case even as Uber cab services have been banned in Delhi by the government. Members of All India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA) staged protest outside police headquarters demanding action against the accused. Brinda Karat after meeting Police Commissioner BS Basssi said that she was assured by Bassi in the case. Aam Aadmi Party members also staged protest outside the residence of Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung and demanded action over the matter and steps for safety of women on Delhi streets. Earlier, Uber cab services issued a statement, wherein it said that "what happened over the weekend in New Delhi is horrific. Our entire team hearts go out to the victim of this despicable crime. Will do everything, to help bring this perpetrator to justice and to support the victim and her family in her recovery. Will work with Govt to establish clear background checks currently absent in their commercial transportation licensing programs."
