At least six dead and seven missing after boat capsizes in Bihar

Jamui, Nov 1 (ANI): At least six people died and seven are missing after a boat capsized in Bihar on Saturday (November 01). The incident took place in Jamui district of the state, when a country boat carrying 16 people capsized in deep waters of Garhi dam. Six dead bodies have been recovered which includes three children, one woman and a youth. A villager Amit Kumar, living near the dam said few people on the boat tried to swim through, with the help of logs being ferried. Reportedly, the commuters from Kauwakol village were on way to Garhi village to attend a religious function.

Police charge lathis at farmers protesting for compensation in Mathura

New Delhi/Mathura, Nov 1 (ANI): Police on Saturday charged lathis at protesting farmers who were demanding compensation for land in Mathura. The farmers had been protesting from a while against the failure of district administration to pay them compensation for their land submerged after construction of Gopal barrage despite several assurances in the past. Police opened fire in the air and resorted to lathicharge to disperse the agitated farmers, who in turn pelted stones and damaged public property. Angry protestors set several vehicles on fire. Many farmers and policemen suffered injuries in the clash.

Will not distinguish between people: SIT on Black Money

Ahmedabad, Nov 01 (ANI): The Chief of SIT on Black Money Justice (Retd) MB Shah said on Saturday that the Special Investigation Team will not distinguish between rich and poor people in terms of investigation on black money. Shah said that the report shall be submitted to Supreme Court in December but that will not finish probe as it will be a time consuming process. Further Shah said that the names of those found guilty shall be revealed publicly and of those not found guilty shall be kept concealed.

Kerala CM Oommen Chandy defends state Finance Minister KM Mani over bribery charges

Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 01 (ANI): Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Saturday has strongly denied allegations levelled by bar owners against the State Finance Minister KM Mani over reopening closed bars and ruled out any probe into the matter. Chief of the Hotels and Bar Association, Biju Ramesh has accused Mani of seeking a bribe of rupees 50 million from him, of which an amount of rupees10 million has already been given. No government probe, reportedly, has been ordered into the matter as yet. The government and bar owners across the state are locked in a legal battle over the new "no-liquor" policy that aims to achieve complete prohibition in the state in a phased manner.

Death sentence to 5 Indian fishermen by Sri Lanka sparks protest in Tamil Nadu

Chennai/ New Delhi, Nov 01 (ANI): Members of Communist Party of India (CPI) in Tamil Nadu on Saturday protested death sentence given to five Indian fishermen by a Sri Lanka court, even as foreign ministry promised the concerns have been conveyed to Sri Lankan authorities in New Delhi and Colombo. The slogan-shouting protesters in Chennai city termed Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa a butcher, demanding revocation of the ruling. State General Secretary of CPI, D Pandian said it is shocking news and demanded the Indian government take the matter to the United Nations. Pandian also added the Indian government should declare Sri Lanka non-friendly nation. Meanwhile, BJP leader Sambit Patra welcomed New Delhi's decision to legally challenge the death sentence awarded to five fishermen for alleged drug trafficking.

600-feet long cake enters record book in India

Thrissur, Nov 01 (ANI): Bakers in Kerala have created a record by making the longest eggless cake to celebrate the 131st anniversary of cake baking in India. The 600-feet long cake has been recorded by the officials of Limca Book of Records and certified as the "Longest ever made eggless cake in India". The attempt was undertaken by Kerala-based bakery house 'Cochin Bakery', which is known to be one of the oldest companies established in the state. A team of 26 chefs took more than 20 hours to bake and decorate the record cake. The idea was conceived by bakery owner, MP Ramesh, who has been making such cakes during the annual meet of Bake Expo. Hundreds of visitors and enthusiasts gathered in Thrissur to catch a glimpse of the mammoth wonder. To keep the cake and make it easy for the visitors, a same length tent was also built.

Kashmir shifts capital for winter

Srinagar, Nov 01 (ANI): The government officials of Jammu and Kashmir geared up on Saturday (November 01) to shift state capital from Srinagar to Jammu city for winter season. The bi-annual practice of shifting the 'Darbar' (Secretariat) between the two capital cities of the state dates back to the 19th century. It is estimated the whole exercise of relocating offices costs the government crores of rupees every year. The civil secretariat will open in Jammu on November 05. Srinagar experiences severe winter, covered with snow and a pleasant weather in summers, while Jammu city records high temperatures during summer, but is relatively warm in winters.
