One BSF jawan killed in fresh ceasefire violations by Pak rangers

Samba, Jan 05 (ANI): One BSF jawan was martyred in fresh ceasefire violations by Pakistani Rangers at Hiranagar in Samba sector of Jammu and Kashmir on Monday. Pakistani Rangers had violated ceasefire again by targeting border posts in Kathua and Samba sectors, drawing retaliation from BSF. Scared villagers were seen running for refuge during the ceasefire violations in the area. Villagers continued to migrate to safer areas in view of the latest round of ceasefire violations by Pakistan. Over 3,500 villagers have migrated from border villages in Samba and Kathua districts. On January 3, mortar shelling by Pakistan rangers had killed two army jawans and one woman while 11 people were injured in the firing.

Protest against journalist Praveen Swami for doubting India's claims over Pak 'terror boat'

New Delhi, Jan 05 (ANI): People staged a protest on Monday against journalist Praveen Swami for opining that the men on the Pakistani boat, which sank after being intercepted near the India- Pakistan maritime boundary, might not be terrorists. The protesters burnt papers of the Indian Express, the national daily for which Swami currently writes. Swami, in an article published on January 3, had written that he doubted India's claims of the boat being a 'terror boat' from Pakistan. He had also mentioned that new evidence was emerging that the men on board might have been small-time liquor and diesel smugglers.

Highway caves in, causes heavy traffic snarl in Ghaziabad

Ghaziabad, Jan 05 (ANI): Commuters bound for New Delhi from neighbouring Ghaziabad were struck in the middle on Monday (January 5) after a part of a highway caved in due to incessant rains in the past week. National Highway 24 connects New Delhi to Uttar Pradesh. Long queues of traffic stretched several kilometres, causing problems for office-goers. Commuters were seen walking on the highway after discarding public transport buses. Eyewitnesses said the rains had caused waterlogging at the Hindon Bridge on the highway which caved in early morning. Police cordoned off the area and diverted traffic to different routes.

Akali Dal holds dharna at Attari Border against drug smuggling

Attari/Amritsar, Jan 05 (ANI): The Shiromani Akali Dal held a protest near the Attari international border on Monday to pitch for "greater vigilance along the border with Pakistan" to stop the flow of narcotics into the state. The Punjab government is fighting allegations of rampant drug use and trade in Punjab especially after Enforcement Directorate (ED) questioned Revenue Minister Bikram Majithia in the drug racket.
