Bangladeshi ministers call for former PM Begum Khaleda Zia's arrest

Dhaka, Jan 22(ANI): Ministers of ruling Awami League-led government in Bangladesh held rallies across capital Dhaka demanding arrest of former Prime Minister, Begum Khaleda Zia, for her association with an Islamist party that is accused of war crimes. The ministers addressed rallies in the city even as a 48-hour general strike call was given by opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) earlier in the day. As per reports, Zia, was released on January 19 after a house arrest of 16 days, amid renewed violence over last year's disputed polls. The violence has worsened steadily since January 5, when protests erupted over last year's election, which was boycotted by the BNP.

PM Modi, Barack Obama to jointly address 'Mann Ki Baat' radio programme

New Delhi, Jan 22 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi and U.S. President Barack Obama will jointly address the former's monthly radio programme 'Mann Ki Baat' on January 27. In a series of tweets, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was eagerly looking forward to the special radio programme with President Obama. "This month's 'Mann Ki Baat' episode will be a special one where our Republic Day guest @BarackObama and I will share our thoughts together. I am eagerly looking forward to the special 'Mann Ki Baat' programme with President @BarackObama, which will be aired on 27th January," said Prime Minister Modi. The Prime Minister also asked the people to use #AskObamaModi and put in their questions for the programme.

Borders well protected ahead of Obama's visit: Manohar Parrikar

New Delhi/ Lucknow, Jan 22 (ANI): Defence Minister, Manohar Parrikar, on Wednesday (January 21) assured that the country's borders were well protected ahead of US President Barack Obama's visit. Parrikar stressed that extra precautions were being taken ahead of the high profile visit, adding that internal arrangements, though confidential, were in place. Obama was invited by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and will be the first U.S. president to attend Republic Day celebrations in New Delhi on January 26. Obama, who visited India in 2010, would also be the first U.S. president to have visited the country twice while in office. The US President along with his family is expected to visit the historic Taj Mahal in northern Agra city. Inspector General (IG) of police, Lucknow, A. Sateesh Ganesh, said that his team was in touch with officials in Agra regarding security arrangements.

Police arrest two men, recover large amount of explosives in Hyderabad

Hyderabad, Jan 22(ANI): Police on Wednesday recovered detonators, gelatin bars and explosives in Hyderabad after they arrested two individuals who were supplying the explosives illegally. Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police of Hyderabad, N. Koti Reddy, said the suspects had been arrested and further investigation is on. He added that another suspect, Rama Krishna, 50, was absconding. The arrest of the two men and subsequent recovery of explosives comes days before U.S. President Barack Obama's visit to India as it celebrates its Republic Day on January 26. Security has been strengthened all over the city following intelligence about possible terror attacks before January 26.

Special team to visit swine flu-hit Telangana

New Delhi, Jan 22 (ANI): Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda, on Wednesday said that a central government-level team will visit southern Telangana to review swine flu outbreak. According to officials, 173 cases of swine flu have been reported in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, of which 169 cases are from the former state. Speaking to media, Nadda said Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao has been assured of full support from the central government in keeping a check on the outbreak. The Health Minister also urged people to take all precautionary measures to k3eep the disease at a bay.

Jadav Payeng develops 1,400 acres of forest area in Assam

Assam, Jan 22 (ANI): Situated along the Brahmaputra River, Jorhat district of Assam is home to the largest river island on earth, Majuli. Located along with a number of barren sandbars, the area was once heavily eroded due to frequent floods. However, with the individual effort of Jadav Payeng, there is now 1,400 acres of lush forest in the area. Since 1979, Payeng has been single-handedly planting and nurturing various species of trees, including vast expanses of bamboo groves. The vast forest is now home to a variety of wildlife species including the endangered Royal Bengal Tiger and a number of migratory birds. Payeng lives in a small hut in the forest along with his family and survives by selling milk. His work has received much appreciation across the country and he was named as the 'Forest Man of India' by the Jawaharlal Nehru University. Honoring his work, the Assam government also named the forest Mulai kathoni bar, after his nickname.
