Japan's Kento Momota defeated Danish world No 1 Viktor Axelsen 21-14, 21-9 on Sunday to win the Indonesia Open badminton tournament, a BWF Tour 1000 event. Winning the title marks a huge turnaround in the recent fortunes of the 23-year-old Japanese star shuttler. Momota, a former world No 2 who was suspended for just over a year by the Nippon Badminton Association (and missed the Rio Olympics) after admitting in early 2016 that he had visited an illegal casino in his homeland, struggled at the start of his comeback last year, reported Efe. On Sunday, Momota rolled to a straight sets win over Axelsen, who had rallied for an 18-21, 21-14, 21-11 victory over Chinese world No 3 Shi Yuqi in the semi-finals on Saturday.

Germany's Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari won the British Grand Prix on Sunday, strengthening his grip on the overall lead in the Formula One drivers' standings after beating out Britain's Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) and Finland's Kimi Raikkoenen (Ferrari), who finished second and third respectively. Starting from the second position, Vettel took advantage of a bad start by Hamilton in pole position to lead the early stages of the 52-lap race at the Silverstone circuit, reported Efe. Raikonnen knocked Hamilton into a spin in the first lap, and the British Grand Prix defending champion had to rejoin the race in 18th place, but managed to work his way back up to fifth by lap 20. Marcus Ericsson of Sweden (Sauber) crashed out in lap 33, and the safety car's deployment gave Hamilton and his Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas of Finland a chance to move up after Ferrari and Red Bull both pitted to change tires.

Belgium's national team was put through its paces during a training session near Moscow on Sunday ahead of the World Cup semifinal against one of its biggest rivals, France. Thibaut Courtois, the first-choice goalkeeper who proved a solid figure between the posts in the team's 2-1 win over Brazil in the quarters, was put to some solo drills, reported Efe. Outfield players, including star feature Kevin de Bruyne, appeared in high spirits as they warmed-up together. Roberto Martinez's Red Devils are yet to lose in their Russia campaign and remained one of the favorites to win the competition. The clash against France on Tuesday, however, will no doubt be a test.

India rode on Rohit Sharma's unbeaten century and Hardik Pandya's four-wicket haul to breeze past England by seven wickets at the County Ground on Sunday to clinch the three-match T20I series 2-1. Chasing 199 for victory, Rohit remained not out on 100 off 56 balls, and including 11 fours and five sixes. This was the right-hander's third century in the game's shortest format, making him just the second player to make three tons. Put in, England posted 198/9 despite making a blistering start thanks to medium pacer Pandya's heroics with the ball. The 24-year-old returned career-best figures of 4/38. In reply, India made 201/3 in 18.4 overs. Pandya also played an unbeaten 14-ball 33-run cameo as skipper Virat Kohli (43; 29b; 2x4, 2x6) missed out on a half-century. This was India's sixth successive T20I series win. Rohit looked at his imperious best from the get-go, even though Shikhar Dhawan's lean patch continued at the other end as the left-hander flicked a poor David Willey (1/37) delivery down the leg side to Jake Ball (1/39) at short fine leg.

Former Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni turned 37 on Saturday, and warm birthday wishes poured in for him not just from the cricket fraternity but also from the fans all around the world. Dhoni bid adieu to Test cricket in 2014 before stepping down from limited-overs captaincy in January 2017, thus handing the captaincy across all formats to Virat Kohli. Posting a picture of Dhoni at full stretch trying to avoid a stumping, former opener Virender Sehwag tweeted,

Seven-time champion Serena Williams has kept her Wimbledon hopes alive with a hard-fought 7-5, 7-6 (7-2) third-round victory over Kristina Mladenovic. Older sister Venus Williams, however, crashed out of the tournament with a 6-2, 6-7 (5-7), 8-6 loss to Kiki Bertens. Mladenovic served for the first set at 5-4 during the match on Friday but she squandered that opportunity and then got broken once again in the 12th game to drop the opener, Efe news reported. Serena only broke the Frenchwoman's serve once in the second set, although that was enough to force a tiebreaker, which she won easily.

Needing 11 runs in the last over, Hales (58 not out) did the task with two balls remaining. He slammed Bhuvneshwar Kumar to a six on the first ball of the 20th over and then hit a boundary to make sure England reach target with ease. With this victory, England made 1-1 in the three match series. Right from the start, England were better team with both bat and ball. Firstly their bowlers did a fantastic job to restrict India to a below-par 148/5 and then batsmen, especially Hales and Johnny Bairstow (28). Chasing a below par score, England made a steady start but in the third over England lost their first wicket as opener Jason Roy (15) was clean bowled by pacer Umesh Yadav. Soon Jos Buttler (15) and Joe Root (9) were also sent packing by Umesh and leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal respectively. Now with scoreboard reading 44/3 in seventh over, Hales came in the middle and tried to steady the ship with skipper Eoin Morgan (17) but the latter failed to support Hales and was dismissed by Hardik Pandya.

Varane (40th) glanced past goalkeeper Fernando Muslera after Griezmann floated a free-kick into the box from the right side. In the second half, Griezmann (61st) made the most of a goalkeeping howler from Muslera to double the advantage as France eased into the semi-finals where they will now take on either Brazil and Belgium. The South American team was dealt a blow before the match when striker Edinson Cavani was left out of the side, having failed to recover from a calf injury. He was replaced in the starting eleven by Girona forward Cristhian Stuani. France also made one enforced change to the team that beat Argentina 4-3 in the round of 16, with Bayern Munich's Corentin Tolisso replacing suspended Juventus midfielder Blaise Matuidi.

Fernandinho's own goal in the 13th minute and Kevin De Bruyne's 31st-minute strike meant Belgium led 2-0 at the half-time. Renato Augusto (76th minute) revived Brazil's hopes but it was too late as Belgium set up a semi-final with 1998 World Cup winners France, the only pre-tournament favourites to be in the last four. Roberto Martinez's Belgium orchestrated a counter-attacking game to near perfection as they caught Brazil, who were without their key defensive midfielder Casemiro, napping. Belgium, who were 0-2 down to Japan in their pre-quarterfinal before winning 3-2, went up 2-0 against Brazil, who were boosted by the return of Marcelo. Belgium replaced forward Dries Mertens with Nacer Chadli in order to make their more compact and instead they put attacking midfielder Kevin De Bruyne near the attackers, Eden Hazard and Romelu Lukaku. Brazil, playing with a 4-3-3 formation, had a promising start and could have taken the lead in th early seventh minute when a corner from the left saw the ball jump out of Thiago Silva's thigh and kissed the left post.
