Russia's Maria Sharapova suffered an upset against 132nd-ranked countrywoman Vitalia Diatchenko, who prevailed 6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 in the first round of Wimbledon tennis championships hereAon Tuesday. The 24th-seeded Sharapova, who was playing Wimbledon for the first time since returning to the WTA Tour last year after serving a 15-month doping suspension, won the first set in part due to her opponent's six double faults, reports Efe. But the 27-year-old Diatchenko was more solid down the stretch and corrected her serving problems, committing just three double faults over the final two sets. The underdog's superior winning percentage on second-serve points (a reflection of her superiority from the baseline) was the difference, as she won 53 per cent of those points compared to 41 percent for her much more accomplished countrywoman.

Riding on a flashy unbeaten century from Lokesh Rahul and chinaman Kuldeep Yadav's maiden T20 International fifer, India outclassed England by eight wickets in the opening match and go 1-0 up in the three-match rubber at the Old Trafford cricket stadium here on Tuesday. Rahul struck a breezy 54-ball 101, laced with 10 fours and five sixes to anchor India's run chase that saw him forge a masterly 123-run second wicket stand with opener Rohit Sharma (32 off 30). Chasing 160, India quickly overcame the early loss of opener Shikhar Dhawan (4) as the right-handed duo of Rahul and Rohit helped the visitors race to 50 in the first five overs. Rahul continued his glorious run with the bat, dominating the partnership with Rohit, who uncharacteristically played the perfect second fiddle to the Karnataka youngster.

It was a brilliant neck-and-neck affair till the 66th minute when Forsberg scored the goal, after which Switzerland failed to display the same energy and thus lost the issue. Forsberg broke the deadlock in the 66th minute through a low-ball shot which was deflected by Switzerland's Manuel Akanji in the goalpost. The match started with Switzerland taking the upper hand in the match. In the opening minute, Switzerland's wide forward Xherdan Shaqiri slammed a ball from distance to the near post. Shaqiri did not stop here and went on with the another chance few minutes later but the ball was deflected away from the danger zone by the defenders. After putting up the early pressure, Sweden regrouped their strategy and it paid off to some extent as forward M. Berg beat the offside trap and charged in behind, but his shot was stopped by the goalkeeper Yann Sommer in one-on-one tackle.

Genki Haraguchi (48th) and Takashi Inui (52nd) gave Japan a shock 2-0 lead in the space of four second-half minutes but Jan Vertonghen (69th), substitutes Marouane Fellaini (74th) and Nacer Chadli (90+4) swung the tie dramatically in Belgium's favour in theatrical fashion. Belgium will now take on Brazil on July 6 in Kazan. As expected, Belgium bossed the opening period with Eden Hazard coming close to breaking the deadlock in the 27th minute. Dries Mertens' cross found Romelu Lukaku in the middle but the ball got tangled under his feet with Hazard on hand to take a swipe. Japan goalkeeper Eiji Kawashima wasn't really tested throughout the first half as the Asian powerhouses showed a lot of grit at the back and tried to break on the counter.

Brazil's talisman Neymar scored one and assisted another in the second-half as the five-time world champions defeated Mexico 2-0 here on Monday to enter the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals. Neymar scored from a close-range in the 51st minute before setting up for Roberto Firmino's strike in the 88th minute as Mexico failed to find a goal. The defeat marks Mexio's seventh consecutive ouster in the pre-quarterfinals of football's quadrennial showpiece. The North American team, which came into the match after a 0-3 defeat to Sweden, lacked the composure in the box to make the difference even if it played with plenty of pace and energy -- like they did in the group stage wins over defending champions Germany and South Korea. For the win, apart from Neymar, Brazil's defence also deserved the credit in a match that saw both teams going full throttle. Brazil have conceded only one goal in four matches. Mexico started brightly but failed to test Alisson in the Brazil goal and tired as the first-half progressed leaving more spaces in midfield. Mexico coach Juan Carlos Ozorio looked to stiffen midfield with the inclusion of veteran Rafael Marquez, while Hugo Ayala replaced Miguel Layun.
