Encounter in J&K kills two LeT militants

Handwara, March 10 (ANI): Two Lashker-e-Toiba militants were killed an Army officer was injured in an encounter between the two sides in Handwara area of Kupwara district in Kashmir, police said. The encounter took place when security forces cordoned off a house in Malikpora village in Vilgam area of Handwara, 85 kms from here, following information about presence of militants there. The police officer said the militants opened firing on security forces, who retaliated, triggering off a fierce gun battle. Some arms and ammunition were recovered from the possession of the slain militants.

Shipping minister urges PM to ensure release of fishermen from Sri Lanka

New Delhi, March 10 (ANI): Shipping Minister GK Vasan, on Monday urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to make efforts for the release of fishermen arrested by the Sri Lankan government for the success of talks between the two governments. Last week, Sri Lanka's navy arrested 32 Indian fishermen for allegedly fishing illegally in their territorial waters less than two months after the two neighbours agreed to work together to resolve the issue. Vasan also requested Singh to support the United States (US) resolution against Sri Lanka.

Savita Bhatti opts out as AAPs Chandigarh candidate for LS polls

Chandigarh, March 10 (ANI): AAP leader Savita Bhatti on Monday, withdrew her candidature as the party’s nominee for Chandigarh constituency. Bhatti opted out after a week of campaigning following the announcement of party’s candidates for the upcoming LS polls. She said that the decision is in the interest of the party. PM Manmohan Singh and PM Sheikh Hasina meet at BIMSTEC, reiterate friendly ties

New Delhi, March 10 (ANI): Prime Ministers of India and Bangladesh met recently in the Burmese capital of Nay pyi taw and reiterated the warm and friendly ties that the two neighbouring countries share. On the sidelines of the BIMSTEC summit, Manmohan Singh met PM Sheikh Hasina and conveyed to her that a pact on the Teesta water sharing was an intricate issue but one which India was in favour of signing. The Teesta River is said to be the lifeline of Sikkim, flowing for almost the entire length of the state. The river forms the border between Sikkim and West Bengal before joining the Brahmaputra as a tributary in Bangladesh. Manmohan Singh also congratulated his Bangladeshi counterpart on her victory in the last general elections and assumption of office of the prime minister for a third time.

Pakistan remains silent on the issue of missing Baloch persons

Islamabad, Mar 10: After covering hundreds of miles on foot from Quetta to Islamabad, Mama Qadeer Baloch finally presented a memorandum to the UN country office in Islamabad. The document demanded an investigation in the issues of missing persons, target killings, enforced disappearances and involvement of agencies in heinous crimes in Balochistan. It also demanded a UN fact-finding mission to investigate mass graves and international standard DNA tests to identify bodies. Mama Qadeer is now waiting for answers.
