Shipping minister urges PM to ensure release of fishermen from Sri Lanka

New Delhi, March 10 (ANI): Shipping Minister GK Vasan, on Monday urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to make efforts for the release of fishermen arrested by the Sri Lankan government for the success of talks between the two governments. Last week, Sri Lanka's navy arrested 32 Indian fishermen for allegedly fishing illegally in their territorial waters less than two months after the two neighbours agreed to work together to resolve the issue. Vasan also requested Singh to support the United States (US) resolution against Sri Lanka.

Savita Bhatti opts out as AAPs Chandigarh candidate for LS polls

Chandigarh, March 10 (ANI): AAP leader Savita Bhatti on Monday, withdrew her candidature as the party’s nominee for Chandigarh constituency. Bhatti opted out after a week of campaigning following the announcement of party’s candidates for the upcoming LS polls. She said that the decision is in the interest of the party. She expressed gratitude to the party for giving her such opportunity but said that it’s no big deal if it failed to materialize. She further said that the purpose is to continue the party’s fight against corruption, and it is no embarrassment at all.

Purnia, Mar 10 (ANI): BJP’s Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi on Monday addressed a rally in Purnia district of Bihar in which he said that Bihar’s Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s PM ambitions led to the break up of BJP and JD (U). He further said that the prospect of being PM does not let Nitish sleep. He further took a dig at Third Front saying that some people in Third front are former PM and some who want to be PM in future. He also added that there are some people in Third Front who have already stitched their clothes for becoming the PM. PM Manmohan Singh and PM Sheikh Hasina meet at BIMSTEC, reiterate friendly ties

New Delhi, March 10 (ANI): Prime Ministers of India and Bangladesh met recently in the Burmese capital of Nay pyi taw and reiterated the warm and friendly ties that the two neighbouring countries share. On the sidelines of the BIMSTEC summit, Manmohan Singh met PM Sheikh Hasina and conveyed to her that a pact on the Teesta water sharing was an intricate issue but one which India was in favour of signing. The Teesta River is said to be the lifeline of Sikkim, flowing for almost the entire length of the state. The river forms the border between Sikkim and West Bengal before joining the Brahmaputra as a tributary in Bangladesh. Manmohan Singh also congratulated his Bangladeshi counterpart on her victory in the last general elections and assumption of office of the prime minister for a third time.

Tonk rally: Rahul Gandhi hits out at BJP

New Delhi, March 10 (ANI): Finance Minister P Chidambaram on Monday emphasized on the freedom of media for the interest of the nation while addressing the Delhi's unit of Kerala's union of working journalists in the national capital. He also called on media to do extensive research before reporting news after mentioning the example of a newspaper that ran incorrect news about Reserve Bank of India. He quoted United States Watergate scandal case as an example of proper research and verification of facts. Pakistan remains silent on the issue of missing Baloch persons

Islamabad, Mar 10: After covering hundreds of miles on foot from Quetta to Islamabad, Mama Qadeer Baloch finally presented a memorandum to the UN country office in Islamabad. The document demanded an investigation in the issues of missing persons, target killings, enforced disappearances and involvement of agencies in heinous crimes in Balochistan. It also demanded a UN fact-finding mission to investigate mass graves and international standard DNA tests to identify bodies. Mama Qadeer is now waiting for answers.

Complete trial in cases involving MPs, MLAs within a year: SC to courts

New Delhi, Mar 10 (ANI): The Supreme Court on Monday set a deadline of one year for lower courts to complete trial in cases involving MPs and MLAs. The apex court ruled that trials in cases involving MPs and MLAs are to be conducted on day-to-day basis. The SC also said that the trial judge will have to explain to the Chief Justice of High Court if he fails to complete trial within a year of framing of charges.
