Hollywood star Richard Gere meets PM Narendra Modi

New Delhi, Jan 05 (ANI): Hollywood star Richard Gere met Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his office in New Delhi on Monday. Gere gifted Modi a bunch of flowers and a Tibetan khata or scarf. Gere, who is the chairman of Gere Foundation and Global Envoy of International Buddhist Confederation, is a frequent visitor to India. The actor had last year shot for his film The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel 2 in Udaipur.

BJP delegation meets PDP leaders to discuss JandK govt formation

New Delhi, Jan 05 (ANI): A delegation of BJP leaders headed by party President Amit Shah on Monday met PDP leaders to discuss government formation in Jammu and Kashmir. BJP leader Ram Madhav said that BJP has received majority in Jammu region while PDP has received majority in Kashmir region so these two parties should together decide upon forming government in the border state. Madhav also said that the suggestion was to take forward talks with PDP.

PM Narendra Modi launches National Programme for LED bulb distribution

New Delhi, Jan 05 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday described the LED bulb as a 'Prakash Path - way to light' as he launched a scheme for LED bulb distribution under the domestic efficient lighting programme in Delhi and a national programme for LED-based home and street lighting. Prime Minister Modi also symbolically replaced one bulb in South Block, with an LED bulb. Replacement of all bulbs in South Block with LED bulbs will enable savings of 7,000 units of energy each month. The prime minister called for making energy conservation through the spread of LED bulbs, a people's movement.

Youth hurls shoe at Manjhi during Janata Darbar, detained

Patna, Jan 05 (ANI): A youth hurled shoe at Bihar Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi on Monday while the leader was addressing people at the Janata Darbar in Patna. However, the shoe did not hit Manjhi. According to the reports, the youth is a resident of Chhapra region. The agitated youth repeatedly said that Manjhi's 'janata durbar' is a farce. The youth has been detained by the Patna Police and is being interrogated. CM Jitan Ram Manjhi every week holds 'Janata Darbar' outside his residence where the he meets common man and listens to their grievances.

Annual Magh Mela starts in Allahabad amidst tight security

Allahabad, Jan 05 (ANI): With the annual Magh Mela beginning on Monday, police have stepped up security in Allahabad city of Uttar Pradesh. During the Magh Mela, thousands of elated Hindus stream to Allahabad for taking a dip at Sangam, the confluence point, where rivers Ganges and Yamuna meet a third mythical river. Several cultural events such as dramatic portrayals from Hindu Epics with music and dance performances, folk theatre are a part of the grand event. Free food and accommodation is provided to Hindu sages and people attending the fair. Reportedly over 25 lakh pilgrims are expected to turn up on the first day of this month-long event. In order to ensure that no untoward incident takes place, the police are leaving no stone unturned in matters of security. Inspector General (IG), Allahabad zone, Daljeet Chaudhary said that cameras had been installed at all strategic points to keep an eye on every movement.

MEA briefs about Indian labourers' dispute in Sri Lanka

New Delhi, Jan 05 (ANI): Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin on Monday briefed about the dispute between Indian labourers and a Sri Lankan company in Colombo. Akbaruddin said that the Indian Foreign Ministry is maintaining continuous contact with the High Commission in Colombo to keep information updated. He added that the Indian authorities have also been giving the labourers allowance. He added that a counselor team has gone to the company and they are working to ensure that the labourers are repatriated at the earliest.

Won't form alliance in J-K in haste, says BJP

New Delhi, Jan 5 (ANI): Asserting that all options are open for government formation in Jammu and Kashmir, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state president Jugal Kishore on Monday said that his party would not form an alliance in haste as they want a stable government which would last for six years. Earlier, the BJP had stated that any attempt to form a government in Jammu and Kashmir without its inclusion will be a travesty of the mandate given by the people of the state. The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections threw up a hung verdict, with the PDP emerging as the single-largest party winning 28 seats. The BJP won 25 seats while the National Conference and Congress won 15 and 12 seats respectively.
