Festive fervor grips Northeast as people come together to celebrate Christmas

Manipur/ Tripura, Jan 02 (ANI): Carols, Christmas trees, prayers and cakes…it was Christmas time again!! Things are improving in Manipur and the people celebrated the birthday of Jesus Christ, with enthusiasm. People from different faiths visited churches to offer prayers on the festival that sends out a message of love and brotherhood. Everybody wished for peace and prosperity in the region. In Tripura also, people from all religions came together to celebrate the festival with enthusiasm. Hundreds gathered at the Santir Rani church in Agartala to take part in the annual Christmas Eve midnight mass. Markets were crowded with people of all age groups buying gifts and cakes for their loved ones. Carol singing, dances, and other forms of merrymaking marked the occasion. New Delhi, Jan 2 (ANI): The Maharashtra government on Thursday partially accepted the Adarsh housing scam report. Chief minister Prithviraj Chavan made the announcement at a press conference after a meeting of the state cabinet. The stage for review was set after Rahul Gandhi last week disapproved the decision of the state government to reject the commission report and said it should be reconsidered. New Delhi, Jan 02 (ANI): Retired Lieutenant General PN Hoon on Thursday said that even though India has cancelled the AgustaWestland VVIP chopper deal, there should be a CBI inquiry to expose all the wrongdoings in the deal and the people involved. India cancelled the controversial Rs. 3,600-crore contract for 12 helicopters meant for VVIPs with UK-based AgustaWestland amid allegations that deal was riddled with kickbacks on Wednesday. The announcement came after a meeting between Defence Minister AK Antony and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday. India, Maldives agree to boost cooperation in maritime security, vow to foster relations

New Delhi, Jan 2 (ANI): India and Maldives on Thursday agreed on a roadmap to boost cooperation in maritime security along the Indian Ocean, following a delegation-level meet between visiting President, Yameen Abdul Gayoom and Indian Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, in New Delhi. President Gayoom is on a four-day trip to India, which ends on January 04. Addressing mediapersons, Gayoom said that the countries in the Indian Ocean region must resolve issues concerning the maritime security. Gayoom said that he and his council of ministers were committed to boost bilateral ties with India and improve relations, keeping aside the past disputes. At the National Stock Exchange the Nifty closed 80.50 points down to stand at 6,215.40. Power grid corporation of India Ltd. and Ashok Leyland were among the top gainers of Group A with an increase of 2.47% and 2.33% along with Strides Arcolab Ltd. and Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd. with an increase of 1.57% and 1.16% respectively, while the top losers of Group A include JPINFRATEC and Century Tex with a decrease of 7.00% and 6.61% along with Adani Power and Suzlon Energy with a decrease of 6.45% and 6.43% at the close of the markets. The Auto sector is down 120.29 points at 12,154.28 while the banking sector is down 264.05 points at 12,746.34 and the realty sector is down 44.95 points at 1,429.84. Lokpal Bill gets President Pranab Mukherjee's nod

New Delhi, Jan 2 (ANI): President Pranab Mukherjee on Wednesday signed the much talked-about Lokpal and Lokayuktas Bill, 2013, to create a powerful anti-graft watchdog. The Bill, which was passed by Parliament in the just-concluded winter session, provides for creation of anti-graft ombudsman to investigate corruption charges against public functionaries including Prime Minister, Ministers and Members of Parliament. Among other provisions, the Bill makes it incumbent upon States to make within a year their own law for setting up Lokayuktas on the lines of the Lokpal Bill. The Bill was sent to the President on Tuesday. It will now be notified in the official gazette for it to become an Act. The Act shall be notified by the Law Ministry. Jan 2, 2014
