15 die in a road accident in West Bengal

Malda, Feb 11 (ANI): 15 people were killed and one injured in a road accident in Malda after a speeding truck collided with two cars on Tuesday. According to the police, 12 men and a child were killed on the spot, and two out of the three injured people died in Malda Medical college and hospital. The victims were returning to their homes at Raiganj in after attending a wedding reception at Sahapur near Malda.

Modi is not dying to go to US: Kirti Azad

New Delhi, Feb 11 (ANI): Commenting on US ambassador's upcoming meeting with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, BJP leader Kirti Azad on Tuesday said that Modi was not dying to go to America and that the latter was extending an olive branch to Modi looking at the changed scenario. Nancy Powell, the US ambassador to India, will be meeting Modi this week, reflecting a turn around by the US after turning its back on him over the 2002 Gujarat riots. In 2005, Modi had been denied a U.S visa under domestic laws related to human rights.

Pakistan air force to provide training to Iraqi air force

Islamabad, Feb 11 (ANI): Commander of the Iraqi Air Force, Lt. General Anwer Hamad Ameen Ahmed, who is on a visit to Pakistan with a nine-member delegation, met Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. A statement issued from the Prime Minister’s office said, during the meeting with Sharif, two agreements were signed between PAF and the Iraqi air force. According to the first agreement, PAF will provide training to Iraq Air Defence Force personnel in all spheres of modern Air Force concepts pertaining to special Air Defence and Air Crew. The agreement was signed by Pakistan’s Air Chief Marshal Tahir Rafique Butt from the Pakistani side and General Ahmed from the Iraqi side.

Andaman and Nicobar Lt Gov proposes slew of safety guidelines post boat tragedy

Port Blair, Feb 11 (ANI): Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lt Gen (Retd) AK Singh, proposed a slew of security guidelines to ensure safety of tourists in an aftermath of the boat capsize tragedy that claimed 21 lives off Port Blair. Singh accepted that boat safety rules were slightly shaky and needed a serious review after the recent capsize tragedy so that such incidents do not repeat. Singh also said the islands were faced with many other issues such as lack of educational institutions and better healthcare centres. Addressing the issue of higher education, Singh said the administration was planning to open medical colleges in the islands that would accommodate large number of native students.

Police arrests five Maoists in Raipur

Raipur, Feb 11 (ANI): Police arrested five Maoists in Raipur. The arrest comes a day after the landmine blast by suspected rebellions in Sukma village that killed two and injured eight CRPF personnel. Additional Director General (ADG) of Police (Intelligence), Mukesh Gupta said that the five Maoists were arrested in Bijapur district of the region during a joint search operation. He also added that they have been trying to arrest the rebels for more than a year.

Manufacturing affordable drugs does not mean spurious: Gulam Nabi tells US FDA Chief

New Delhi, Feb 11 (ANI): Union Health Minister Gulam Nabi Azad told US FDA Chief, Margaret Hamburg that Indian drugs should not be treated as spurious just because they are affordable, after the two countries signed a Statement of Intent on Cooperation working to keep off sub-standard pharma exports from entering the United States. Underlining New Delhi’s commitment to stringent regulatory mechanism, Azad said it has taken measures for capacity building, strengthening laboratories and more transparency that would turn out favourable for both India and US.

Lt Governor gives nod to SIT probe on 1984-anti Sikh riots

New Delhi, Feb 11 (ANI): Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung gave a nod to the Aam Aadmi Party-led Delhi government's recommendations for a probe by Special Investigation Team (SIT) on the 1984-anti Sikh riots. Speaking over the decision senior lawyer of Delhi High Court H.S Phoolka said under the SIT probe, all those cases which were closed or shown untraced would be re-opened, re-investigated and if the need arises fresh FIRs would be registered. The Delhi Government last week had recommended to Jung to set up a SIT to probe the anti-Sikh riots within a time frame of one year.
