Anti-dowry law misused, no automatic arrest: SC

New Delhi, July 03 (ANI): The Supreme Court has said that women were increasingly using the anti-dowry law to harass in-laws and restrained police from automatically arresting the husband and his relatives on mere lodging of a complaint under Section 498A of the Indian Penal Code. The apex court said the attitude to arrest first and then proceed with the rest is "despicable" which must be curbed and directed all state governments to ensure that police do not resort to arresting in all offences punishable up to seven- year jail term including dowry harassment cases. New Delhi, July 3 (ANI): Facebook's Chief Operating Officer, Sheryl Sandberg, apologised for psychological experiment and said it was terribly communicated. Addressing a conference of Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) Ladies Organisation in New Delhi, Sandberg stressed that Facebook takes privacy and security issues seriously as people share on the social networking site. In 2012, Facebook manipulated the timeline of over six lakh users for nearly a week, showing only positive status for one set of users while showing negative updates for the other set. The experiment was conducted without bringing to knowledge of the users, whose timelines were manipulated, thereby raising privacy concerns. Jul 3, 2014

New Delhi, July 3 (ANI): Following the Gopal Subramanium controversy, Congress party accused the Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party of breaching constitutional norms by usurping the right to select or reject the judges of the apex court. Congress Spokesperson, Abhishek Manu Singhvi, said the government action against Subramanium smacks of pettiness. In a letter sent to the Chief Justice of India, Subramaniam had withdrawn his nomination for the candidature of apex court. New Delhi, July 3 (ANI): The economic affairs committee of the Indian cabinet decided to bring onions and potatoes under the essential commodities act in order to curb the prices of these two essential vegetables on the nation's menu. Law minister, Ravi Shankar Prasad held a cabinet briefing to explain the government's decision of including onions and potatoes under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955, for one year. Prasad said that the decision will prevent hoarding as it will place an upper limit on holding stock by wholesale traders and others. New Delhi, July 3 (ANI): MEA Spokesperson, Syed Akbaruddin, said facilities were being made available through community welfare funds to pay for immigration fines of stranded nationals in strife-torn Iraq. Addressing mediapersons in New Delhi, Akbaruddin said immigration issues were impeding the evacuation of Indian nationals. About 10,000 Indian nationals work in Iraq, mostly in areas unaffected by the fighting between the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and the national army. Dr Sudhir Gupta had earlier alleged that he was pressurized to give a doctored report in Pushka's death case. Gupta headed the team of experts who conducted the postmortem on Pushkar's body and had alleged that he was pressured by top officials to show that Pushkar's death was 'natural'.
