Kozhikode, May 16 (ANI): Exotic varieties of mangoes tickled the taste buds of fruit lovers in Kozhikode city in Kerala state. The 21st edition of the mango festival, which began on May 08, has been organised by Calicut Agri- Horticultural Society and will conclude on May 18. Various varieties of mangoes were put on display including Alphonso, Kudadath, Banganampalli Malgova and the native Chakkarakkutty. Rare and indigenous varieties such as Chandrakkaran, Perakka Manga, Ammini and hybrid varieties like H4, Mallina, H44 and H151 also delighted the visitors. Meanwhile, there was also a mango eating competition which enthralled the audience. The participants were required to eat as many mangoes as possible. Jose Thomas emerged victorious who was rewarded with a cash prize and variety of mangoes to take home. A total of 35 participants tested their appetites with the crowds cheering and lauding for them.Mango, popularly known as king of fruits, is grown in different parts of the country. May 17, 2014

Buddha's birth anniversary, or Vesak Day, is celebrated on various dates in the Spring season throughout the world. It is usually observed during the first full moon in May. Participating in the festivities in the northern hill town of Shimla, devotees gathered early in the morning at the monastery to offer their prayers after which they were treated to Traditional Tibetan and tribal Himachali dances. Hundreds of Tibetan monks, Indian Buddhists, Muslims, Hindus, Christians and devotees from various other religions gathered to participate.In northern Kushinagar, members of the Buddhist community organised a religious procession with enchanting decorated idols of Lord Buddha being carried on vehicles and chariots amid enthusiastic supporters.Meanwhile in the national capital too, devotees gathered in huge numbers to offer prayers and monks propagated the message of peace and harmony.
