Reactions flow in as minor girl gang-raped in Delhi

New Delhi, July 29 (ANI): A Class X student was allegedly gang-raped by five persons, including two minors, at gunpoint in Uttam Nagar area of west Delhi. The incident reportedly took place a week ago when the accused took the victim, who was on her way to school, to a house and gang-raped her at gun point. They also recorded MMS clip of the entire incident. Two of the five accused are reportedly minor and one is known to the victim. While the police have arrested three accused, hunt is on to nab the absconding two.

New Delhi, July 29 (ANI): As the Modi government mulls over scrapping the collegium system for appointment of judges, politicos on Tuesday emphasized on the need for the judiciary's independence and balance in appointment of judges. The government on Monday consulted former chief justices of India and top jurists on the proposed Judicial Appointments Commission Bill, in a bid to scrap the present collegium system.

Salman Khan's 'Kick' storms box office, Collects Rs 83 Crores in Opening Weekend

New Delhi, July 28 (ANI): Salman Khan has proved it yet again that he is the ultimate king of the box office. His Eid release Kick opposite Sri Lankan beauty Jacqueline Fernandez has collected a whopping Rs 83.83 crore in its opening weekend. Film critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh said the weekend collection of Kick was spectacular. He tweeted: #Kick has a HUMONGOUS Day 3. Collects 30.18 croreon Sunday, thus crossing 83 crore mark in its opening weekend. WOW! But the movie just missed bagging the much coveted 100 crore mark in opening weekend, a feat earlier achieved by his movie Ek Tha Tiger. While Ek Tha Tiger entered the Rs 100 crore club on its first weekend, Bodyguard earned Rs 88 crore. Kick has become the highest opening day grossing film of 2014. The festival of Eid, is expected to boost the film's box office collection even more.

India working to evacuate nationals from Libya as violence erupts: MEA

New Delhi, July 29 (ANI): As Libya caught up in a major violence after a second fuel tank caught fire amid heavy fighting at Tripoli airport between rival militias, India's MEA Spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said that the country is working to evacuate Indian nationals from the country. He said that the 62 coordinators coordinating with Indian nationals have been set up already. The ministry is also providing them with air tickets to return to India, using funds from India. Akbaruddin also assured that Indians are safe till now. The battle for control of the airport erupted two weeks ago when Islamist-led militias, mainly from the western city of Misrata, tried to wrest control of the area from a rival militia from the town of Zintan.

Legal eagles voice against the SC collegium for judges appointment

New Delhi, July 29 (ANI): Senior jurists on Tuesday voiced against the Supreme Court Collegium saying the system has no credibility and transparency. Former Law Minister Shanti Bhushan said that he is totally against the Collegium because a group of people cannot decide on the best person as a judge. He said that there should be a change in the system so that corrupt people don't get appointed. Former High Court Judge Justice (Retd) RS Sodhi also welcomed changes but advocated for the same not just in Delhi but throughout India. Meanwhile, Supreme Court Lawyer KTS Tulsi also maintained that the Collegium system is not correct.

At least 12 pilgrims killed in road accident in Aurangabad

Aurangabad, July 29 (ANI): At least 12 pilgrims, five of them women, were killed and 22 others injured when a speeding container ran over them on the New Delhi-Kolkata National Highway in Bihar's Aurangabad district on Tuesday. The heavy vehicle lost control and ran over the devotees sleeping by the side of the road. After running over the victims, it hit a parked bus in which some other devotees were resting. The Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Bhim Kumar, said pilgrims were returning from Deoghar after offering the holy water. The injured have been admitted to Sadar Hospital with some of the seriously injured rushed to Magadh Medical College and Hospital in Gaya.

India's medal tally reaches 26 in Commonwealth Games with fourth position in hand

New Delhi, July 29 (ANI): India added four more medals to its Commonwealth Games 2014 tally on Day 5. Shooter Jitu Rai kept his reputation intact by clinching the gold medal and Gurpal Singh bagged silver in the 50m pistol event. Gagan Narang, taking part for the first time in the 50m Rifle prone event had to be content with a silver as the shooters did the bulk of the medal shopping during the day. Weightlifter Vikas Thakur added another silver when he came second in the 85kg category late on Day 5.

SC Collegium system has completely failed: Markandey Katju

New Delhi, July 29 (ANI): After Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad decided to scrap the SC Collegium system for appointing the judges, Supreme Court Former Judge Markandey Katju said hat the system has completely failed. He said that the candidates should be interviewed about his ideas, workings, & personal life & this should be televised to maintain transparency. Katju further said that the majority should be the judiciary but the government should have a say in the same.

Law Minister holds meeting with former judges to seek opinion on scrapping SC Collegium

New Delhi, July 29 (ANI): Law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad convened meeting of former judges and eminent jurists and sought their opinion on a panel that would appoint judges. Earlier, Prasad told parliament that the government was keen to set up a committee to appoint judges in wake of allegations of judicial corruption by a former Supreme Court Judge, Justice Markandey Katju. Prasad said there was an overwhelming opinion to amend the present system where collegiums of five Supreme Court judge appoints their colleagues.

Lucknow/ Srinagar/ Jammu/ New Delhi/ Saharanpur, July 29 (ANI): Muslims across India offered Eid prayers on Tuesday after clerics sight the moon at the end of holy month of Ramadan the previous night. Muslim Cleric Khalid Rasheed Firangi Mahali had confirmed that Muslims would pray for peace and harmony in the country as well as in Palestine on the auspicious occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr. In Srinagar, Muslims offered morning prayers at a mosque and celebrated the festival, praying for peace and brotherhood. In Jammu too, people in large numbers arrived at a mosque as the Ramadan month culminates in Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations. Meanwhile, BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi also offered prayers at Delhi's Jama Masjid and wished everyone Happy Eid.

West Bengal CM misleading people on Encephalitis: Biman Bose

Kolkata, July 29 (ANI): CPI (M) leader Biman Bose hit out at West Bengal government over its inability to tackle Japanese Encephalitis. Almost 570 people in India have died after contracting encephalitis, commonly known as "brain fever", health authorities said on Friday, warning the death toll may rise with more people still at risk. In West Bengal, where at least 111 people have died from both strains, a senior health official said authorities were taking emergency steps to contain the outbreak. Bose attacked Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, saying she was misleading people. The health department has set up clinics across affected areas and is trying to prevent breeding of mosquitoes by fogging, especially around pig farms, where there is a high risk of contracting the virus.
