Maharashtra Congress dispatch relief materials to flood hit JandK

Mumbai, Sep 09 (ANI): Congress party in Maharashtra, on Tuesday extended help to victims in flood-ravaged Jammu and Kashmir and dispatched relief materials. Indian-administered Kashmir is experiencing worst flooding in 60 years, killing at least 175 and inundating homes, military bases and hospitals in region's main city Srinagar as the Jhelum river overflowed its banks. Prime Minister Narendra Modi termed it as a national disaster and announced 1000 crore rupees in disaster relief payments, as well as compensation to victims and their relatives. On Tuesday, the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee dispatched rubber boats to help rescue operations in the valley. Chennai, Sep 09 (ANI): Members of MDMK on Tuesday took to streets in Tamil Nadu, against participation of Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa in UN General Assembly on September 25. Accusations of atrocities have been rife since the end in May 2009 of conflict between ethnic Tamil separatist rebels and Sri Lankan government forces that killed more than 100,000 people. Tens of thousands are unaccounted for. On Tuesday, MDMK chief Vaiko led the protest in Chennai and said Rajapaksa had insulted the dignity of the United Nations. In May, the Sri Lankan unit of Transparency International said the defense ministry had ordered the cancellation of a course on investigative journalism for Tamil reporters. Police claim to arrest two foreign nationals staying illegally in Dharamshala

Dharamshala, Sep 09 (ANI): The local police claimed to have arrested two foreigners- one Russian and another Israeli- who have been staying illegally in the north Indian foothill town of Dharamsala. The police conducted a drive against foreigners staying illegally in Dharamshala and adjoining areas as a routine check and arrested another national, an Israeli, Gabrial Damian Kattan, without any valid documents at Dharamkot village near Mcleodganj town. Kattan came to India in 1999 and has been staying at different places secretly since then. He was also found in possession of two passports, one Argentinean passport expired in the year 2007 while the Israeli passport he possessed expired in 2012. The two accused have been booked under Foreigners Act, 1946 and sent to judicial custody till September 18 by a local court on Monday. Sep 9, 2014

People pay homage to ancestors in Gaya as 'Pitru Paksha' begins

Gaya, Sep 09 (ANI): Devout Hindus gathered at temples and river banks in Bihar to observe fortnight-long Hindu ritual of paying homage to departed souls and ancestors. 'Pitru Paksha' is marked annually, where family members offer food to ancestors. Traditionally, the eldest son or member of a family performs the ritual. Guided by priests, families performed religious rituals on the banks of River Ganges in Gaya district and other temples located in the city. The food is usually cooked in silver or copper vessels and placed on banana leaves. The offerings are also believed to cure diseases as well as infertility, apart from driving away evil souls.
