Cold wave intensifies in northern, central India

Kanpur/ New Delhi/ Bhopal, Dec 16 (ANI): Cold wave conditions and foggy weather disrupted normal life in central and northern India on Tuesday. After New Delhi and Kanpur witnessed light rain showers, the temperature went down, adding to the woes of daily wage labourers and homeless people as they have no alternative to fight the chill. A resident of Kanpur, Kishan, said due to rains the cold has become unbearable. People of New Delhi also had a tough time dealing with the cold as mercury dipped to 10 degrees Celsius. Temperatures in Himachal Pradesh also plummeted as some regions of the state received snowfall. Reactions come in as TMC demands withdrawal of PM's control over CBI

New Delhi, Dec 16 (ANI): Reactions come in after Trinamool Congress demanded in Lok Sabha that the CBI's control be withdrawn from the Prime Minister and handed over to the Lokpal. BJP Spokesperson Nalin Kohli said that TMC should rather demand that justice be done to those who lost their money in the scam. NCP leader Majid Memon said that CBI should try and clean its image of a 'caged parrot'. CPI leader Atul Anjan said that the TMC should remember that they never questioned the CBI during the UPA government. Taliban gunmen hold 500 students hostage in Peshawar, 16 feared killed

Peshawar, Dec 16 (ANI): In the latest major offensive, 500 students have been held hostages and 16 are feared to be killed after Taliban militants stormed the Army Public School in Peshawar in broad daylight on Tuesday. Five or six militants reportedly wearing military uniforms entered the Army Public School in the city of Peshawar. The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the attack, saying the gunmen had been ordered to shoot older students but not children. Security forces arrived at the Army Public School, located on busy Warsak Road near cantonment, and kicked off rescue operation. Police and military officials said two of the attackers have been eliminated while one blew himself up during retaliation by security forces. They said the terrorists attacked central auditorium of the school where a function was underway. Dec 16, 2014

New Delhi, Dec 16 (ANI): Union Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar on Tuesday said that India was well prepared to tackle situations like the Sydney hostage crisis, which claimed the lives of two Australian citizens and an armed gunman. Parrikar said this after he paid tributes to the martyrs at the 'Amar Jawan Jyoti' along with the three service chiefs. Earlier on Monday, an Iranian-origin man, Haron Monis, took 17 customers and workers hostage at the Lindt Cafe at Sydney's Martin Place and displayed a black flag with Arabic script in the window, sparking a security alert in Australia. The 16-hour siege ended when heavily armed Australian police stormed into the cafe late on Monday night. The incident reportedly claimed the lives of the manager of the cafe and a 38-year-old woman lawyer besides the gunman. Dec 16, 2014
